Levi Williams, 26, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter after punching Richard Wingrove, 71, outside the Waggon and Horses pub in Newmarket, Suffolk, in a fight outside the establishment

A Newmarket jockey has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of a pensioner following a brutal fight outside a pub,

Levi Williams, 26, was arrested after alleging punching Richard Wingrove, 71, outside the Waggon and Horses pub in Newmarket, Suffolk, on March 8 last year.

The apprentice jockey was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm but later rearrested and charged with murder following the death of Mr Wingrove days after the incident.

Two men had sustained injuries as a result of the pub brawl and were taken to hospital. One man, 45, was later discharged but Mr Wingrove remained in a critical condition. Mr Wingrove died in Addenbrooke’s Hospital on March 18.

Williams, who has 12 winners to his name from 156 rides, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on April 10 at Peterborough Crown Court. It is believed Williams had struck Mr Wingrove at least twice.

The court had previously heard Williams had left home at 16 to go to the British Racing School.

Williams had been looking to rebuild his racing career after he was banned from the sport for 18 months in September 2023 after he took cocaine in a pub toilet three days before a race. It was the second time he was barred from the sport for failing a drug test.

Williams was bailed to re-appear at the court on June 4 for sentencing.
