A 37-year-old man has been apprehended, suspected of planning terrorist acts, by counter-terrorism police investigating a series of assaults on Jewish sites in London.
He was arrested at a location near Barnstaple, Devon, on Sunday, according to the Metropolitan Police. The force added that there have been 26 individuals over the sequence of attacks on Jewish sites since late March.
Arson attacks have occurred on Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green, north-west London, a synagogue and a former Jewish charity, as well as an incident involving a drone flown near the Israeli embassy. Counter-terrorism police have been examining the potential involvement of Iranian proxies.
Last week, the Met stated that premises associated with individuals opposing the Iranian regime have also been targeted.
An attempted arson attack was also executed on April 15 at Finchley Reform Synagogue, and around 8.30pm outside the offices of a Persian media company, both in north-west London.
On Tuesday, a 17-year-old lad admitted guilt at Westminster Magistrates’ Court to arson not endangering life following the assault on Kenton United Synagogue.
Meanwhile, a woman has been arrested following the tragic deaths of two boys, aged one and three, in a house fire in Wolverhampton.
The woman, in her 30s, remains in custody this afternoon as inquiries into the Mason Street blaze, which occurred around 8.30pm on Friday, continue.
DCI Kylie Westlake, from the public protection unit, said: “This is a truly tragic incident and our thoughts remain very much with those who loved the children who have been lost.
“We understand the shock and distress this awful incident will have caused to many people and we are working at pace to ascertain exactly what has happened. Officers have arrested a woman on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of two children.
“While we would ask people not to speculate about this or the wider incident, we would ask that anyone who can help with our enquiries, and who is yet to speak with us, to get in contact.”
