Toddler, 2, killed in horror ‘hit-and-run crash’ whereas taking part in on toy tractor

A two-year-old boy has died after being struck by a car in a horror hit-and-run.

Little Peter Mulcaire, 2, had been playing on a toy tractor when he was struck by a Jeep near his home in Rathkeale, Co Limerick, the Irish Mirror reports. Gardaí (Irish Police) said the vehicle involved did not remain at the scene after the collision at 4pm on Saturday.

The youngster was airlifted by emergency helicopter to University Hospital Limerick with severe injuries but was subsequently declared dead. A male motorist, aged in his 30s, was detained at a separate location by Gardaí on suspicion of driving under the influence.

He was brought to a Garda Station in County Limerick to provide a blood/urine sample and was subsequently released pending analysis of that test, reports the Mirror.

A Rathkeale community fun day, which had been scheduled for Sunday, was cancelled by the organisers “out of respect” to the boy and his family and the “tragic circumstances” of his death.

Loved ones and family members of the youngster posted photographs of him on social media and shared their sympathies and shock with his family.

“Never in my life seen sadder, may u get best bed Peter only a baby…heartbreaking,” stated a relative.

Another stated: “Heartbreaking…rest in peace baby Peter.”

A neighbour of the boy’s family, wrote: “l’ve never see sadder, rest in peace to our little neighbour Peter, may God comfort his family tonight. I’m so sorry for year loss, my heart breaks for his family, a little angel.”
