Terrifying Miami Grand Prix crash sees automotive flip the other way up in F1 chaos

The Miami Grand Prix started in chaotic fashion as Max Verstappen spun before two huge crashes saw one car flipped upside down and stranded off the ground

A chaotic opening few laps of the Miami Grand Prix saw two huge crashes occur, including one that saw Pierre Gasly flipped upside down.

Racing in Miami was started three hours early to avoid the chaos that severe weather could bring to the area, but the opening laps of the Grand Prix were still action packed.

At the first corner, Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli both locked up while Lando Norris was forced to take evasive action to avoid crashing into Verstappen and making contact with the pit lane wall. The Dutchman’s car then spun round just one corner later after getting on the power too quickly.

But more drama followed just six laps later when Gasly’s Alpine rolled upside down and was left stranded on the tyre wall after Liam Lawson locked up his brakes and crashed into the side of the Frenchman at turn 17.

Further down the track, Isack Hadjar was left furious with himself after crashing out at the tight hairpin having clipped the inside barrier and breaking his steering, seeing him crash uncontrollably into the outside wall.

The Virtual Safety Car was deployed before the full Safety Car was brought out. All drivers involved reported they were fine and exited the vehicles.

Lewis Hamilton’s race was also compromised following first lap contact with Franco Colapinto’s Alpine, which left his Ferrari damaged. The seven-time world champion reported his struggles racing following the collision.

Lawson retired his car after the crash with Gasly, with Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg also pulled out of the race, leaving just 18 cars on track at the Safety Car restart.
