‘Controversial 90s development returns that divides followers – however I couldn’t be happier’
OPINION: The 90s jelly shoe trend is back with high end brands and budget retailers bringing it into 2026 fashion, but while some are divided I am fully obsessed with the nostalgic comeback
I never thought I’d say this as a grown adult with bills, responsibilities and a strong opinion on what counts as a ‘proper shoe’ but jelly shoes are officially back and I am absolutely obsessed all over again.
If you grew up in the 90s or early 2000s you will know exactly the feeling I mean. Those slightly squeaky, glittery, plastic little wonders that made you feel like you were walking around in pure summer joy. You either had a pair in bright pink, clear glitter, or that weird jelly blue that went with absolutely nothing but somehow everything. And now, suddenly, they are everywhere again. What makes it even better is that this isn’t just a nostalgic throwback hiding in the corner of high street shops. Jelly shoes are having a full fashion moment again, spotted all over runways and worn by influencers like they are the most normal thing in the world.
Even high end brands have jumped on the bandwagon, reworking them into ‘luxury’ versions that cost more than a weekly food shop and come in minimalist colours that kind of defeat the whole fun point of them.
Because let’s be honest, jelly shoes are not supposed to be serious. They are meant to be a bit tacky, a bit silly, and completely joyful. That is the whole charm. You are not meant to be brooding in quiet luxury loafers when you could be clomping around in something that looks like a childhood holiday in shoe form.
Of course, if you do want to dip your toe back into the trend without spending designer money, there are plenty of affordable options out there.
Affordable fashion sites like Shein are already full of colourful, throwback styles that let you relive your school playground era without breaking the bank. High street versions are also everywhere, proving this is one of those rare trends that genuinely works at every price point.
What I love most is how wearable they still are. They go with jeans, dresses, beach looks, city outfits, and they instantly make any outfit feel less serious. It is fashion that does not take itself too seriously and honestly we need more of that.
So yes, I am fully on board. Bring back the jelly shoes, the squeaks, the glitter, the chaos. My inner child is thriving.
