UK Politics dwell: Starmer makes use of main reset speech to emphasize left wing agenda and assault far proper

Keir Starmer has said he’ll prove his doubters wrong as said he took responsibility for Labour’s devastating election losses.

In a speech that could make or break his premiership, the Prime Minister came out swinging, saying: “I know I have my doubters. I know I have to prove them wrong, and I will.”

He warned that the country would go down a “very dark path” if Labour doesn’t turn things around, allowing “dangerous opponents” like Nigel Farage to get close to power.

He signalled he would resist calls to move left or right, saying: “We cannot win as a weaker version of Reform or the Greens, we can only win as a stronger version of Labour, a mainstream party of power.”

Mr Starmer said it was tough to admit that working class voters don’t believe Labour cares about their struggles. “Truth be told, I’m not sure that they believe we care, that they believe we see their lives. That’s not easy to say. When you come from a working class background like me.” He spoke of his brother Nick, who struggled all his life to find work, and his sister Katy didn’t get sick pay during the pandemic as she worked as a carer.

The PM promised to put Britain “at the heart of Europe” as he lashed out at “chancer” Nigel Farage for taking the country for a ride with Brexit.

He promised a new youth mobility scheme to replace Erasmus. He also confirmed plans to renationalise British steel and to expand a scheme to hand cash to struggling communities to revive much-loved facilities.

It comes as Labour rivals and MPs weigh up his future. Mr Starmer dodged a question on whether he would block Andy Burnham from seeking a Commons seat, amid growing support for the Greater Manchester mayor on the back benches.
