Major workforce led by ex-Watford boss take world report with 108 league wins in a row
The club – also known as the Johor Southern Tigers and based in Johor Malaysia – have now won an astonishing 108 games in a row, and have won the league every year since 2014
A footballing world record has been broken – thanks to a club most Brits have never heard of. While the name Johor Darul Ta’zim FC doesn’t exactly roll of the tongue for many, the Malaysian Super League club thrashed their rivals Kelantan 14-1 over the weekend.
But why are we, the Daily Star in the UK, telling you this? Well, because they now hold a rather impressive world record – jointly.
The club – also known as the Johor Southern Tigers and based in Johor Malaysia – have now won an astonishing 108 games in a row, and have won the league every year since 2014, which is a joint record alongside the all-time world record set by the Ivory Coast club ASEC Mimosas.
Owned by Tunku Ismail Idris, who just so happens to be the Crown Prince of Johor, the club is managed by former Watford and Sheffield Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz. He has led them to 21 wins this season, with just one draw and a huge goal difference of +87.
They also won the Malaysian FA Cup for the fourth time in a row. The club’s last defeat was in April 2021, losing 1-0 to Terengganu, and have spent the four years since then winning every single domestic game possible.
They’re not doing as well in continental competition, however, as they find themselves 3-1 down in the Asean Club Championship semi-final, having lost the first leg to Thailand’s Buriram.
Munoz said, after the 108th consecutive win: “We need to trust in ourselves, and we need to work and to give our best.
“We are working for our club and for our spirit and for our mission and we need to try. We need to go there and do better. This is what I have in my mind. I believe in that. We always have confidence in ourselves, especially at home.
“We have our fans behind us, so JDT will have to contend with that. Our fans get behind us in every game. We believe we can win every game.
“It’s not that we are going in and being arrogant. We have a belief as a group that we are a strong team, we have strong individuals and we work hard together. If you combine all that together, then you have a good chance of winning football matches.”
They can smash the world record in the club’s next league game . . . which will be at the start of the 2026/27 season.
