thirtieth anniversary of Three Lions to spice up England World Cup hopes

60 years of hurt, perhaps a new version of Three Lions can help the England Team finally triumph at the World Cup this summer

It’s coming home for real this summer, hope Baddiel, Skinner & Lightning Seeds who are bringing Three Lions back again.

To mark the 30th anniversary of their era-defining footy anthem Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home) has been remastered with a slew of extras for a fresh release on June 12. The hope is it will inspire the England football team to finally bring it home this summer.

Three Lions is the only song ever to reach UK No1 on four separate occasions with the same artist — twice in 1996 on its original release, for three consecutive weeks during the 1998 World Cup, and again in 2018 when it made chart history by jumping from No.24 to No.1 in a single week.

It’s now 60 years of hurt for English football fans and songwriter Ian Broudie can’t believe it’s lasted this long.

“Back then I never expected decades later to still be talking about it, but I’m very thrilled that it’s the case, it’s kind of a never-ending lovely thing.”

Perhaps embittered by many years of hurt, for a while Broudie avoided Three Lions, but he said: “I have a comfortable relationship with Three Lions now. It’s been through the mill a bit.

“All bands tend to say about their most successful song, ‘We don’t want to play that one live’.

“But I’m very comfortable with it since it came back a few years ago with all the memes. Now whenever I play it, it brings a smile to my face and everyone. It’s a lovely thing.”

Ironically The Lightning Seeds will be touring with Scottish rockers Deacon Blue this summer, so it will be interesting to see how the song goes down on the road.

Speaking to the BBC David Baddiel said they wanted to write an anthem “that actually reflects what it’s like to be an England fan”.

He said Frank Skinner had described the song as a “bittersweet love song to the England team”.

The new Three Lions package featuring fresh artwork, a karaoke version plus two additional tracks: Three Lions (Jules Rimet Extended Mix), Three Lions (Sake Bar Remix).
