Reform councillor requires UFO committee as baffled punters ask ‘what you on about’

A new Reform councillor has called for the establishment of a UFO committee to assess aviation safety concerns as a UK airport prepares to reopen

A new Reform councillor used his first meeting to call for a committee to investigate UFO activity around a UK airport.

During an extraordinary meeting of the City of Doncaster Council on Monday, May 11, Reform UK Councillor Kieran Lay of South Yorkshire proposed the creation of “a temporary Doncaster unidentified anomaly phenomena overview and safety committee or panel”, voicing concerns over the safety of Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

The airport, which has remained closed since 2022, is set to reopen next year. The reopening plans hinge on a £57 million loan from Doncaster Council, a loan Reform UK councillors had previously threatened to withdraw.

However at this week’s meeting, they decided to proceed with the loan, subject to certain conditions regarding the lease with landowner Peel.

During the meeting, Thorne and Moorends Ward councillor Lay highlighted the potential safety risks associated with UFOs and urged the council to evaluate the possible threat in light of the airport’s reopening.

Cllr Lay said: “What I’ve got to say has not been mentioned by any member in this chamber and it’s been a topic that seems no one wants to cover.

“Given the rarefied unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) activity recorded directly over and in the immediate vicinity of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, including the 2020 cockpit video of the supersonic object and multiple 2025 to 2026 sightings in the Bawtry and Toll Bar areas and including my own ward over this weekend.

“And in line with NASA’s recommendations for evidence-based UAP oversight focused on aviation safety, I move to make the suggestion that full council establishes a temporary Doncaster UAP overview and safety committee or panel.

The councillor added: “This panel and committee shall coordinate with all local authorities across Yorkshire and the Humber on aerospace safety monitoring and data sharing, produce a public report in six months assessing any implications for airport operations and regional infrastructure, operate within the existing council budget with no additional expense to the taxpayer, follow a best practice, evidence-based approach consistent with NASA’s guidance and UAP safety and transparency.

“This ensures Doncaster leads on emergent aviation considerations, while maintaining full transparency and public confidence in the airport reopening.

“If we are serious about delivering a safe, successful airport for the people of Doncaster, shouldn’t we at least examine all verified data, including the UAP activity recorded right here, before committing any further public money?”

Fellow councillors in the chamber could be spotted chuckling and grinning as Cllr Lay presented his case, reports Yorkshire Live, while at the end of his speech, one person could be heard asking “What are you on about?”

Doncaster Council has not provided a response to his suggestion.
