BMW ‘ploughs into folks’ at M4 motorway companies as witness says ‘it was terrible’
An eight-year-old child was among three people injured after a car crashed into them before hitting a building at Cardiff Gate services off the M4 – emergency services are at the scene
A car struck three pedestrians, including an eight-year-old child, before ploughing into a motorway service station. The collision happened at approximately 11.45am today (Monday) at Cardiff Gate services near junction 30 of the M4.
An eyewitness told Wales Online. the incident involved a black BMW striking people seated at a table before smashing into the main building. “It was awful,” the witness said.
“About 15 people were trying to lift the car off.” She explained that the building’s window front shattered from the impact. I imagine the driver had a medical emergency as I can’t understand how they went into the building at that speed,” the witness added. “All emergency services are there.”
A South Wales Police spokesperson said: “We are currently dealing with an incident at the Cardiff Gate Services. It is understood a car collided with a retail premises on the site.
“Three people have been taken to hospital including an 8-year-old child and a 39-year-old man, who were both pedestrians, and a 76-year-old woman who was the driver of the vehicle.
“It is understood none of the injuries are life-threatening. An investigation into the incident is underway. Anybody who was at that location who may have witnessed what happened is asked to make contact – please give reference 2600162925.”
One driver on the scene said around five police cars and an ambulance are present.
“The service station is closed and taped off but the petrol station is still open,” he said. “There are lots of cars parked up all around the service station.”
Cardiff Gate service station is home to businesses including Waitrose, WH Smith and Burger King. It is not clear when it will reopen.
