Man Utd set for Mason Greenwood windfall as ‘switch contact’ made with participant’s father

Mason Greenwood’s former club Manchester United are in line for a payday as he looks set to depart Marseille in the summer

Manchester United look set to benefit financially as Mason Greenwood exiting Marseille appearing increasingly probable this summer. The forward seems ready to leave France for Roma following the club’s failure to secure Champions League qualification.

Greenwood has netted 26 goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions in 2025/26, drawing attention from Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus. Roma, though, appear to be frontrunners, having already established contact with the player’s father, with Greenwood reportedly enthusiastic about the opportunity, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The striker looks destined to end his stint in France after Les Phocéens came up short in their bid to qualify for European football’s elite tournament. Greenwood completed a £26.6million transfer from Old Trafford in 2024 after United determined he could no longer continue at the club.

The academy product was suspended by United when he faced charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour in 2022.

The 24-year-old refuted the allegations, which were subsequently withdrawn, but found himself out of consideration at Old Trafford before linking up with Marseille after a loan spell at Getafe.

United are believed to have included a sell-on clause in the initial agreement, entitling them to up to 50 per cent of any future transfer fee for Greenwood. Marseille are reportedly demanding £43m for the striker, who is contracted until 2029 and are under pressure to offload players after failing to secure Champions League qualification.

The French outfit are reportedly in a ‘precarious financial situation’ and need to finalise several sales before June 30 to meet France’s financial regulator’s requirements.

Reports from Turkish media suggest that Fenerbahce presidential hopeful Hakan Safi is gearing up to announce Greenwood’s signing as part of his plans to rejuvenate the club. Roma are banking on their existing connections with Marseille to give them an edge.
