England participant scores vs Mexico as Jude Bellingham World Cup hero regardless of 5/10 nightmare
All of England’s player ratings versus Mexico in the World Cup as Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions took on the co-hosts at the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City
England played out a World Cup classic against Mexico at the legendary Estadio Azteca in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup as they clinched a legendary victory with 10 men.
A rollercoaster of a game saw the Three Lions soak up the co-hosts’ early pressure as Jordan Pickford made a save fans hailed as Gordon Banks worthy to deny Raul Jiminez. Thomas Tuchel’s men then struck on the counter, when Bukayo Saka hung up a cross for star man Jude Bellingham to convert with a diving header.
Just two minutes later, the same man doubled the score, as this time Anthony Gordon found Harry Kane, who gave Bellingham a tap-in. But Mexico fought back and Julian Quinones halved the deficit before the break. England then weathered the storm, only for makeshift right-back Jarrell Quansah to be shown a red card for a lunge after the interval.

Down to 10 men, Gordon surged forward and was brought down by Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel, with Kane dispatching a penalty with aplomb to make it 3-1. But the England captain then gifted the home side a spot kick of their own by accidentally kicking Brian Gutierrez in the box, with Jiminez putting it away to set up a nervy finale.
Yet England held on for an epic victory despite the predicament Quansah had placed them in. Here’s how the players rated in Mexico City.
England starting XI
Jordan Pickford
Made superb first-half saves from Raul Jimenez but was powerless to stop the Mexico striker’s penalty. 8.
Nico O’Reilly
Struck the post with a fantastic low shot. Substituted due to injury after a very mixed game. 7.
Marc Guehi
Incredibly composed under pressure – and there was a tremendous amount of it. 8.
Ezri Konsa
Another unsteady performance in central defence and was subsequently moved to right back to hold the line. 7.
Jarrell Quansah
Dismissed following a savage challenge on Jesus Gallardo. Had been having such a solid game. 5.
Declan Rice
Booked after just 59 seconds and is clearly far from fully fit – but what a performance. Heroic. 8.
Elliot Anderson
Worked tirelessly and it’s hard to understand why he was the one substituted. Seemed the wrong decision. 8.
Anthony Gordon
Comfortably the finest display by any England winger throughout all their matches. 8.
Jude Bellingham
His brace made him comfortably England’s standout performer – once more. 9.
Bukayo Saka
Following his assist in the opening period, became the sacrificial lamb after Quansah’s red card. 7.
Harry Kane
England’s hero and villain on this occasion. Converted a spot-kick and supplied an assist but gave away a clumsy penalty to allow Mexico back into the match. 8.
Substitutes
John Stones for Saka, 57 mins, 8.
Djed Spence for O’Reilly, 75 mins. 7.
