England fan barges into stay broadcast asking ‘ought to we discuss in regards to the Falklands?’

England fans were left gutted when the Three Lions crashed out of the World Cup last night. And one fan displayed his disappointment in a very public – and loud – way.

England fans have been left gutted after the Three Lions narrowly missed out on a chance to repeat the glory of 1966 when Argentina came back in the dying minutes of the World Cup semi-final. It looked like Harry Kane’s boys were set to triumph over the title holders after Anthony Gordon’s goal put them 1-0 up in the 55th minute.

But hopes were dashed after Enzo Fernández hit the net just five minutes before the final whistle to take the score level, and Lautaro Martínez made it two in the second minute of stoppage time. Attempts to fight back were futile, and the prospect of facing France in a third place play-off on Saturday proved little consolation for England.

There were rowdy scenes outside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, as Argentina fans celebrated their team booking a place in Sunday’s final, while England supporters were despondent at the loss. While everyone dealt with the disappointment in their own ways, one fan apparently decided it was time to make his voice heard on live TV.

Sky Sports presenter Jacquie Beltrao was reporting live from outside the stadium after the final whistle, when she was suddenly interrupted by a middle-aged man in an England shirt, who lumbered into the shot from the left.

In a clip of the moment shared on X, formerly Twitter, the man says: “Should we talk about the Falklands?” before beginning to sing a version of Don’t Cry for Me Argentina from the musical Evita as he is moved out of shot by two other men. “I’m sorry about that,” Jacquie says as the fan attempts to get back in view of the camera and continues to sing while being ushered away.

“There’s a lot of fans who have had a lot of alcohol and spent and awful lot of their money to get here,” Jacquie continues. The moment was shared on X by Jono Read, who said: “Your da’s taking the football result well…”

The moment came after members of the Argentina team unfurled a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” – meaning “The Falklands are Argentine” – while celebrating their win. The Falkland Islands are a British overseas territory in the south west Atlantic Ocean which have long been the subject of a dispute between the UK and Argentina.

In April 1982 Argentina invaded the islands, setting off a war with Britain in which 655 Argentine servicemen, 255 British personnel, and three people from the islands were killed. Argentina surrendered 74 days later. In a 2013 referendum, islanders voted almost unanimously to remain an overseas territory of the UK.

And Argentina could face sanctions for the banner, which could be deemed to break a ban on political messaging. In 2014 Fifa fined the Argentine Football Association £20,000 after players held up a banner with the same message before as friendly against Slovenia.

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni had said before the game he did not want the fixture to become about the conflict over the territory.

But the country’s vice-president Victoria Villarruel tweeted a victory message at full-time saying “it wasn’t just another match” alongside a video of what appeared to be Argentinian soldiers. In the build-up to the fixture, she had described England as “invaders” and “usurping pirates”.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast this morning, business secretary Peter Kyle branded the display “entirely inappropriate”. “Politics needs to be separate from football,” he said “In fact, the World Cup has one of its central tenets that politics is separate from football. That is now a matter for Fifa. I expect Fifa to do its investigation thoroughly.”

Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called for Argentina’s players who displayed the banner to be suspended from the World Cup final, and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch wrote on X: “The Falkland Islands are British. The Conservatives will always defend them.”
