The Prime Minister says we should feel optimistic about Devolution. Oh yeah? Optimistic about local and regional politicians permitting big business tycoons like Musk to devastate this green and pleasant land with data centres and new roads and all that will flow from that like new towns, and yet more infrastructure protects? Devolution is about power to those who pretend to represent the people while really they’re hand in glove with the construction and civil engineering industries. Every policy of Labour always involves construction contracts. Alan Meadowcroft, Royton
As summer draws to a close and we reflect on the hottest conditions in recent memory, there’s a chance we’ll get this every 9 years on average from now on. We must invest heavily in desalination plants around the coast. Even if they don’t extend fully inland it will take the strain off the existing water supply and stop us running out. It’s perfectly do-able. Saudi Arabia, Gulf states, Israel and even parts of Australia all use sea water to supplement the natural supply. We are an island surrounded by the stuff so it’s a no brainer for me. Bedford Boy
