Ballon d’Or 2026 high 20 contenders ranked and rated as Harry Kane battles Yamal and Mbappe
Football’s most prestigious and controversial individual accolade will be awarded next month when the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or is selected and it’s set to be a fierce battle.
French magazine France Football has awarded the honour since 1956 to mark the player judged to have performed the best over the previous season. It’s previous winners are a who’s who of the beautiful game – Lionel Messi has captured the Ballon d’Or a record eight times and Cristiano Ronaldo five times, while the current holder is Paris Saint-Germain sensation Ousmane Dembélé.
On Monday, France Football revealed the 30 contenders ahead of the ceremony in London on October 26. Players from the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and elsewhere were included on the shortlist, sparking great debate over who should claim the prize in one of the most open fields in recent times, reports the Mirror.

The voting procedure requires participants to weigh up three key factors. Firstly, individual displays, decisive and impressive character. Secondly, team displays and accomplishments. And thirdly, class and fair play.
Voting should be based on performances between August 3, 2025 and July 19 of this year, With that in mind, here’s our rankings for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or and the men we believe are the top 20 contenders.
20. Bruno Fernandes

It’s quite the achievement to be nominated without having featured in a European competition for your club, secured silverware or progressed far at an international tournament. But it demonstrates just how highly Bruno Fernandes is regarded that he’s made this list.
Nine goals and a record-breaking 21 assists in the Premier League last season propelled Manchester United back into the Champions League, and he’s collected accolades ever since, including claiming the PFA Player of the Year. Extraordinary, though still some distance from securing the Ballon d’Or.
19. Marquinhos
Despite featuring in nearly double the number of competitions, Marquinhos only made one additional appearance compared to Fernandes at club level last season. That’s because PSG prioritised their skipper for the Champions League which they successfully retained after defeating Arsenal on penalties, adding to another Ligue 1 title triumph.
But perhaps Marquinhos’ finest moment arrived after the final whistle in Budapest. The 32 year old approached Brazilian compatriot Gabriel Magalhaes to offer comfort after the Arsenal defender missed the crucial penalty. Classy.
18. Jude Bellingham

It was another campaign to forget for Real Madrid, as they went without silverware for the second consecutive year and switched managers once more. Jude Bellingham, though, was frequently there to drag them out of difficulty and contributed to 15 goals across all competitions.
But it’s his inspirational displays for England at the World Cup that shine brightest. Driving the Three Lions forward during the knockout phases, he made a mockery of anyone questioning his place as a starter under Thomas Tuchel with consistently brilliant performances.
17. Joao Neves
While PSG’s forwards frequently receive the majority of plaudits, it’s their world-class midfield that provides the foundation for such prolific output. Joao Neves is now a two-time Ballon d’Or nominee and rightfully so.
The Portugal international was a genuine candidate going into the World Cup, but his nation’s disappointing campaign fell well short of expectations. Nevertheless, he remains crucial to the finest club team on the planet and cannot be overlooked.
16. Vitinha
Remaining with PSG and Portugal, Vitinha finished third in last year’s Ballon d’Or but would struggle to crack the top 10 this time round. Naturally, the midfielder was a key catalyst behind his club’s triumph and recorded a personal-best return for goals and assists.
There’s precious little separating Vitinha and Neves as footballers, who occupy contrasting roles for club and country. However, superior goal contributions and appearances for the resilient former Wolves star tips the balance in his favour.
15. Gabriel Magalhaes

Having become something of a pantomime villain to non-Arsenal supporters over the past 12 months, Gabriel has endured another undoubtedly exceptional year at both ends of the field. His commanding performances at the back were enhanced by four goals and five assists, demonstrating his threat from dead-ball situations.
Unfortunately for him, Brazil were pitted against Norway at the World Cup and Gabriel found himself facing Erling Haaland in the last 16. Haaland got the better of the 28-year-old in an aerial duel to open the scoring late in the match, which crushed both Brazil’s hopes and Gabriel’s slender prospects of claiming this accolade. Nevermind missing the crucial penalty that lost Arsenal the Champions League final shootout against PSG.
14. William Saliba
It’s equally challenging to separate the Arsenal centre-backs. They work in perfect harmony and wouldn’t reach the same heights without their reliable partner.
Both featured in the same number of matches, secured the Premier League crown and were absent from the World Cup. However, Saliba just edges Gabriel in our list given France’s extended tournament run and how his injury during their semi-final clash with Spain proved to be the pivotal moment in Les Bleus’ campaign – and not in a positive way.
13. Nuno Mendes
Perhaps the finest player on the planet in his role, Nuno Mendes enjoyed another campaign controlling the left wing for PSG. With four goals and one assist in the Champions League, his input proved crucial to their second European success.
However, like Saliba, his injury during the World Cup encounter with Spain marked a turning point for his country. It’s remarkably rare for a full-back to claim one of these honours, but recognition must be given when someone commands their position as thoroughly as Mendes does.
12. Erling Haaland

Despite Manchester City failing to clinch the Premier League or Champions League, it mustn’t be overlooked that they enjoyed a triumphant campaign by securing the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Leading the charge was Erling Haaland, who netted 38 goals across 52 outings and claimed the Premier League Golden Boot.
Yet Haaland’s strikes for Norway merit equal recognition, with his 16 goals during qualification propelling them to the World Cup. The frontman then found the net seven times across five matches at the tournament to confirm he can deliver for both club and nation.
11. Fabian Ruiz
He might not receive the same praise as Vitinha or Neves, but Fabian Ruiz claimed an impressive four trophies for club and country throughout the voting period. The Spaniard lifted the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, Ligue 1, the Champions League and World Cup.
Ruiz isn’t consistently a first-choice selection for his sides, but his impact cannot be dismissed. It’s high time he stepped out from being the overlooked star of the PSG midfield.
10. Lionel Messi
Entering the top 10 now, and irrespective of your opinion on Lionel Messi since his move to Major League Soccer, he’s certain to attract votes following a spectacular World Cup display with Argentina. Netting eight goals and registering four assists at the tournament demonstrated he’s nowhere near finished, though he recently called time on his international career following Argentina’s defeat in the final.
Messi delivered two assists as Inter Miami clinched the MLS Cup for the first time in December, and – not that they should all be considered for the Ballon d’Or – he’s contributed to a staggering 32 goals in 24 matches for his club in 2026. Remarkable for a 39 year old.
9. Pau Cubarsi
It’s hard to fathom but Pau Cubarsi is still only 19. The Barcelona academy product has long been one of the first names on the team sheet for Hansi Flick and now holds the same status at international level.
Having bagged the Spanish Super Cup, the La Liga title and the World Cup this year, he already possesses a trophy collection which would be the envy of 99 per cent of footballers. Cubarsi might perhaps receive more recognition if there wasn’t another teenager in Barcelona and Spain’s ranks.
8. Declan Rice
It seems like we hear more about what Declan Rice can’t do than rather than all the things he can. But the Arsenal midfielder continues to perform and drive his team to victories week after week, gradually silencing the critics even if his game could be improved in some areas.
Key in Arsenal’s Premier League title victory as well as their runs to the finals of the Carabao Cup and Champions League, his effort for England at the World Cup when he clearly wasn’t fit also speaks volumes about his character. And with five goals and nine assists last season, don’t let anyone convince you he isn’t effective going forward.
7. Ousmane Dembele

The defending champion was the obvious favourite heading into last year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, but it would be a surprise to witness him claim it once more. Nonetheless, don’t allow that to diminish another superb campaign for Ousmane Dembele.
With 20 goals and 11 assists to his credit, the Frenchman demonstrated that he’s now amongst Europe’s most reliable attackers following years of questions over whether he possessed the consistency to claim the biggest honours. Dembele achieved that once again with PSG, though came up short with France.
6. Michael Olise
The statistics tell their own story with Michael Olise. In 52 matches, the winger recorded 23 goals and 26 assists in a side where he isn’t even the main striker – more on him shortly, though.
Olise’s extraordinary contribution secured him the Bundesliga Player of the Year accolade as Bayern Munich swept to the championship before claiming the German Cup. The former Crystal Palace star also concluded the World Cup with the highest number of assists (seven).
5. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Despite missing the World Cup, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia should certainly rank amongst the leading candidates for the Ballon d’Or. Two-footed, determined and a scorer of vital goals, there are few players more entertaining to observe than the Georgian.
Kvaratskhelia found the net in every knockout stage of the Champions League except the final, including a spectacular 28-minute cameo against Chelsea which witnessed him net twice and set up another. A captivating player to observe and for full-backs to contain.
4. Rodri
It’s a testament to how crucial Rodri was to Manchester City that only when he was completely fit did they appear capable of mounting a challenge to Arsenal for the Premier League crown. His performances in the spring helped bridge the divide, driving City towards two trophies in the process.
For Spain, he operated the machinery in Luis de la Fuente’s finely-tuned system. Rodri claimed the World Cup Golden Ball following another colossal display in the final and his transfer to Barcelona has made them favourites for the Champions League for many.
3. Kylian Mbappe

Moving to the podium positions now and it appears that Kylian Mbappe is conducting his own crusade to secure the Ballon d’Or. Following a tally of 42 goals in 44 matches for Real Madrid, the forward found the net 10 times for France at the World Cup and shattered the tournament’s all-time scoring record.
“I’ve made history in the most important competition, Mbappe stated at a press conference this week. ” Mbappe declared at a press conference this week. “Maybe it’s a good year for this but people can vote according to what they think.”
There’s little question that Mbappe will prove popular amongst voters, but his absence of silverware is anticipated to damage his prospects. The same cannot be said of our next two, though.
2. Lamine Yamal

Last year’s runner-up, Lamine Yamal may have to accept the same position this time around. Outstanding for Barcelona, Yamal registered a career-high 24 goals while contributing 17 assists to help Flick’s side secure a domestic double.
And while the 19 year old endured a subdued World Cup by his standards, he remained ever present for Spain beyond their opener when he was still recovering from injury. Yamal will have countless chances to claim the Ballon d’Or later in his career, but for now we reckon he’ll have to make do with second place.
1. Harry Kane

Record breaker, history maker, Harry Kane is at the summit of his powers. The standout moment of his campaign may have been his 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern, but there’s considerably more to Kane’s game than statistics.
Whether it’s dropping deep to win tackles or threading passes from midfield, England’s skipper has so much in his armoury. And it seems appropriate that with the Ballon d’Or ceremony set to take place in London for its 70th anniversary, Kane should be the one lifting it at the end of the evening.
