Man shot lifeless by armed police after two-vehicle crash on busy UK street
The road has been shut overnight and police have now confirmed that a man has died after being shot by armed police near the scene of the collision on Sunday night
A man has been fatally shot by police following reports of a two-car crash.
The A11 remained closed through the night in Thetford, with Norfolk Constabulary confirming that a man died after being shot by officers close to the collision site, reports the Mirror..
Police were alerted to London Road at approximately 8.25pm on Sunday, December 28 after receiving reports of a two-vehicle smash.
One man, thought to be behind the wheel of one of the cars, fled the scene carrying what witnesses described as a handgun.
Armed response units were deployed and the suspect was subsequently shot by police a short distance from the original incident, the force confirmed.
Despite paramedics’ best efforts, he was declared dead at the scene.
The A11 remains shut in both directions between the Thetford Ranges roundabout and the Brandon Road roundabout.
Assistant Chief Constable David Buckley said: “We understand this incident will cause concern in the community. Our highly trained armed officers deploy to hundreds of firearms related calls each year, but incidents where police discharge firearms are thankfully incredibly rare.”
He added: “A full and independent investigation is already underway. We are of course cooperating fully with the IOPC investigation and will be handing over all bodyworn footage and 999 calls to ensure transparency.”
The senior officer concluded: “We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.”
An investigation is currently in progress to determine the complete circumstances surrounding the incident. Norfolk Constabulary has made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
