Mark Carney points stark warning on Canada safety in wake of Trump threats

Canada’s Mark Carney made a major move away from the US and towards a rival, amid increasing hostility from the nation’s closest ally – the US

Canada’s Prime Minister shared a chilling warning on his own nation’s security amid the backdrop of Donald Trump’s 51st state threats on the northern neighbour.

Mark Carney flew to Beijing and met with Chinese leaders and company bosses to sign a major deal to help Canada become less reliant on the United States, at “a time of global trade disruption” he said. Canada and China appeared to start healing their fractured relationship with one crucial person out of the room and thousands of miles away – Donald Trump. The US President slapped 25% tariffs on his northern neighbour last year and claimed Canada should become the US’ 51st state.

In Beijing, Carney said: “The security landscape continues to change. We face many threats. You manage those threats through alliances.”

Canada’s largest trading partner is the US, but the nation appears to be reengaging with China, its second-largest economic partner. Ottawa and Beijing signed a “landmark” trade deal, which would allow thousands of Chinese electric cars to be sold in Canada in exchange for a break on tariffs for agricultural products.

Carney even told reporters that the economic agreement would help Ottawa and Beijing for the “new world order”. This comes as another blow to the strong historic tie between the US and Canada, that Trump has helped to breakdown.

Trump imposed the 25% tariff on Canadian products last year and made a political statement with the harsh economic move. He claimed Canada had to do more to stop the illegal fentanyl drug and migrants from reaching the United States. The President used similar language when he started a tariff war with China.

The unpredictable US leader then threatened to raise those Canadian tariffs by an extra 10% after a province used Ronald Reagan in an anti-tariff advert. Carney eventually apologised to Trump for the clip.

Trump then also threatened to take the whole country and make it part of the US. In a raging Truth Social post, in May 2025, he wrote: “I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!”

These threats have been amplified with Trump’s increasing rhetoric over Greenland. The US already had a military presence on the world’s largest island, which is a territory of Denmark but sits right next to Canada, but this is not enough for the President.

Trump has claimed he needs to own Greenland to stop China and Russia from taking over instead, saying: “Countries have to have ownership and you defend ownership, you don’t defend leases. And we’ll have to defend Greenland.” In a worrying threat he added that the US would do it “the easy way” or “the hard way”.

Denmark has fiercely pushed back at the President and said the island is not up for grabs. Danish MP Rasmus Jarlov said: “I don’t think you’re going to find anyone here in Parliament who would be willing to sign a sale of Greenland.” Despite this, the President has not been put off his pursuit and threats against an ally nation.
