Moorfields Eye Hospital boss ‘straddled sunbathing lady and uncovered himself to her then groped feminine police officer who arrested him’

The former boss of Moorfields Eye Hospital straddled and flashed a sunbather in a London park before sexual assaulting the female police officer who arrested him for it, a court heard today.

Dr Martin Kuper, 57, was accused of exposing himself in front of a woman who was enjoying the sunshine in Battersea Park in April last year, just months before he left his role at the hospital.

The Oxford graduate and doctor then groped a female police officer once she had arrested him.

‘The defendant approached the victim while she was sunbathing, straddled her and exposed his penis,’ said prosecutor Barbara Valentini.

‘He ran off into the bushes after being told off by the victim.’

Ms Valentini said that after his arrest Kuper grabbed a female police officer in her crotch area.

Kuper appeared in the dock today and plead not guilty to charges of exposure and sexual assault.

He was appointed as chief executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in September 2021 and held the role for almost four years until his departure in July last year.

Prior to his role at the eye hospital, Kuper was chief medical director at Northwick Park Hospital in north-west London. He previously held a senior post at Whittington Hospital in north London.

He spoke in court to confirm his name, age and home address in Chelsea before repeating ‘not guilty’ twice when the charges were read to him.

Kuper elected to stand trial in front of a judge and jury at the Crown Court.

Magistrate Sandra Burling freed Kuper on bail, with a condition that he does not go to Battersea Park – where he allegedly flashed the sunbather.

He is due to appear at Kingston Crown Court on March 10, where a date will be set for his trial.
