Russia accuses UK of secretly plotting to arm Ukraine with nuclear ‘miracle weapon’
Vladimir Putin’s Foreign Intelligence Service – aka SVR – has claimed the UK and France are ‘actively working’ to provide Ukraine with nuclear weapons.
Russia has accused Britain of secretly ‘preparing’ to arm Ukraine with nukes. Vladimir Putin’s Foreign Intelligence Service – aka SVR – has claimed the UK and France are ‘actively working’ to provide Ukraine with nuclear weapons.
Germany has ‘wisely declined to participate in this dangerous adventure’, it added. In a statement released on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the SVR’s press office said London and Paris ‘believe Ukraine needs to be equipped with ‘wunderwaffe’’.
The word means ‘miracle weapon’ or ‘universal solution’ in German and was coined by the Nazi propaganda ministry during WW2 to boost morale when defeat was imminent.
The Russians said the ‘British and French elites’ were willing to supply Ukraine with nukes because they ‘are not prepared to accept defeat’.
The two nations came up with the plan after realising the ‘current situation in Ukraine leaves no chance of achieving their much-desired victory over Russia at the hands of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’, the statement claimed.
The SVR claimed Britain and France are working on the covert transfer of equipment and technology to Ukraine. The French TN75 warhead used on the M51.1 submarine-launched ballistic missile was a possible option, Russia claimed.
The SVR branded the ‘plans’ a ‘flagrant violation of international law’ – in particular the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
It said the move threatened to undermine the global non-proliferation system to stop nations expanding their arsenals of weapons of mass destruction.
The Russians said that was why the West was seeking to supply nukes in secret. They want to make Kyiv’s acquisition of the weapons appear to be the result of Ukrainian development.
The SVR concluded its statement by saying: “Such extremely dangerous plans by London and Paris demonstrate their loss of a sense of reality.
“They are vainly hoping to avoid responsibility. Especially since everything secret will inevitably come to light.
“There are many sensible people in the military, political, and diplomatic circles of Great Britain and France who understand the danger their leaders’ reckless actions pose to the entire world.”
Meanwhile, Western intelligence experts have warned that Russian spies have turned properties across Europe into a network of ‘Trojan horses’ designed to unleash a coordinated sabotage campaign.
Exploiting weak legal frameworks, clandestine Russian units are suspected of purchasing sensitive real estate close to military and civilian sites in at least a dozen European nations. Intent on escalating its ‘hybrid war’ on the West, Russian spy agencies have allegedly acquired summer houses, holiday cabins, warehouses, abandoned schools, flats and entire islands with the intention of using them as launchpads for surveillance, sabotage and attacks.
Up to 200,000 Ukrainians and 1.2m Russians are understood to have died in the conflict.
Senior sources said there were no plans to supply Ukraine with nuclear weapons and dismissed the suggestion as ‘fantasy’, adding: “We want to end the conflict not escalate it.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said Russia’s claim Britain plans to supply Ukraine with nukes was a ‘falsehood’ to distract attention from Putin’s ‘heinous’ atrocities.
The PM’s spokesman said: “This is a clear attempt by Vladimir Putin to distract from his heinous actions in Ukraine. There is no truth to this.”
The UK targeted Russia’s economy with the largest sanctions package since 2022 in a bid to restrict the flow of money and arms to Putin’s war machine.
Giant pipeline firm PJSC Transneft, 175 other companies and 48 oil tankers involved in ‘shadow fleet’ operations to supply Russian exports around the world in defiance of restrictions were hit by new sanctions.
Firms involved in providing components for Russian drones, banks and the nuclear power and gas industries were also among the almost 300 new sanctions.
Sir Keir said they were ‘essential in terms of weakening the ability of Russia to continue with this aggression’.
He told his Cabinet: “This is not a remote conflict a long way away from the United Kingdom.
“It’s about our values of freedom, democracy and the right of a country to decide for itself what it does, which is democracy and sovereignty.”
He said the impact of the war was being felt in UK households because of the spike in energy prices since the invasion.
“They are still 40% higher than they were before,” he said.
“So every family is feeling it.
“And how and when this conflict ends is going to affect everybody in the United Kingdom for a very long time which is why it is so important we make sure that it’s a just and lasting peace.”
He said Putin was ‘standing in the way’ of peace.
The PM joined French president Emmanuel Macron, German chancellor Friedrich Merz, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and 30 other leaders on a conference call in which they ‘reiterated their unwavering commitment to working together to achieve a just and lasting peace’.
They called on Russia to engage in negotiations ‘in a meaningful way and to agree to a full, unconditional ceasefire’.
