Arne Slot learns essential lesson as Liverpool get revenge over Wolves in FA Cup

It has been somewhat of a mystery why Andy Robertson hasn’t played as much as he should have done this season.

The Scottish left-back, who was almost shown the door in January when Tottenham Hotspur came calling, has had to watch Liverpool’s defensive frailties from the bench. However, on Friday evening, the once-flying full-back rolled back the years.

It was the Robertson show as he broke the deadlock on the hour mark and then set-up Mohamed Salah to double their lead a couple of minutes later. And the game had already escaped from Wolves by the time Curtis Jones put the game beyond doubt.

Robertson was a staple at the Reds under Jurgen Klopp – and while he has showed signs of his best footballing days being behind him, he still showed his class on Friday.

The Scottish star brings a calm energy to the pitch that just isn’t replicated by Milos Kerkez. The Hungarian might be starting to fit into his Liverpool shirt, but their game time should be split 50/50.

Liverpool’s second was the Reds of old, Robertson pushing forwards, whipping the ball in and finding Salah. It might, until the end of the season, be time to go back-to-basics for Slot.

“Robertson should have more game time. Still got class,” one fan admitted on social media. While a second said: “I don’t understand why Andy Robertson doesn’t start more… goal and an assist!”

“When Robertson is fit and flying Liverpool have a completely different dimension on the left that nobody has adequately replaced or rotated,” a third shared.

And another added: “Since the beginning of the season, I’ve been begging for Robertson to play more. I do appreciate Kerkez, but he needs to rest, & give Robbo more time!”

It was a different Liverpool to the one that huffed and puffed on Tuesday evening.

Slot’s side played with energy, a lot of that coming from young Rio Ngumoha – he was excellent off the bench in the week, and again showcased his talents at Molineux. Liverpool have quite the talent on their hands.

It’s an away trip to Turkey next for the Reds, and a chance to right another wrong, after Galatasaray bested them in league phase of the Champions League.
