Michael van Gerwen boozy partying slammed as darts star dubbed ‘past embarrassment’

Michael van Gerwen has been criticised by a fellow pro for his boozy PSV celebrations, with the three-time world champion missing the Players Championship to party instead

Vincent van der Voort has criticised Michael van Gerwen’s raucous celebrations following PSV Eindhoven’s victory in the Eredivisie.

The Dutch giants clinched the league title with a 4-3 win over Utrecht earlier this month, as Feyenoord dropped points against FC Volendam.

Long-time PSV supporter Van Gerwen opted to skip the Players Championship double header in Wigan this week to join the football festivities instead. The World No. 4 was seen sporting a bucket hat and singing as he partied into the night.

However, Van Der Voort has issued a cautionary note to his close friend. Speaking on the Darts Draait Door Podcast, he said: “Now I have to watch what I say, otherwise I’ll have his fan club after me saying it’s fine and the lad should enjoy himself.

“I sent him one message after I saw all those videos of him. I told him he was beyond embarrassment and that I had two pieces of advice. One: ‘You should never sing again,’ and two: ‘Never wear that swim cap again. Come on, that’s not on.

“But he had an absolutely brilliant night. I’m fine with that. You can’t say he doesn’t enjoy a party.

“He’s there anytime, anywhere, Despite going through a tough time, he’s also having the time of his life right now.”

Offering his thoughts on why Van Gerwen has embraced the party lifestyle, Van Der Voort added: “You shouldn’t forget that from the age of fifteen or sixteen he was only focused on darts. He never went out with his friends, was always thinking about the next tournament and the pressure that came with it.

“Now he has time to really let off steam, something he hasn’t experienced all that time. You have to hope this phase doesn’t last too long.

“He’s behaving a bit like a twenty-year-old going completely wild. At some point you hope he’ll think that darts is his number one priority. But he’s enjoying himself now, and I can grant him that.”

It follows the three-time world champion’s separation from his wife Daphne Govers last year, which preceded a spell of disappointing results. However, it seems the 36-year-old is now moving forward, recently making light of what was previously a painful chapter.

Recording a promotional clip for Cinch with Gian Van Veen in a car, a supporter asked whether he cooks. He chuckled as he responded: “When you are a divorced man you have to cook for your kids.”

When asked about his preferred dish to prepare, he said: “Pasta probably I like to make the most, like Spaghetti. But also just like a roast dinner.”
