Kirklees College locked down and college students informed to ‘keep in school rooms’ as cops swarm

Kirklees College in Yorkshire has locked its doors and reportedly told students to stay in classrooms after ‘receiving information’ this morning – police are at the scene

A lockdown is currently in force at a college, with students reportedly confined to classrooms. Kirklees College has confirmed that all their centres are presently under “precautionary” lockdown following “received information” this morning (Thursday, May 7). The college is acting on the advice of West Yorkshire Police.

All college buildings are now locked, and students have been urged to stay put and remain calm. Eyewitness reports suggest students are locked in classrooms and those not already there have been advised not to attend college today, reports Yorkshire Live.

Kirklees College have published a statement on the lockdown. In it, the college said: “Following advice from the police, all Kirklees College centres are now in a precautionary lockdown.

“If you are currently at one of our centres, please remain where you are. A member of staff will provide further instructions. If you have not yet travelled into College today, please do not make the journey. All centres are closed for the rest of the day.

“We will keep you updated as soon as we have further information.”

West Yorkshire Police said: “We are aware of emails that have been sent to a number of schools and colleges in Kirklees district.

“We understand that any communication of a threatening nature, particularly within an education setting, will be of concern but would stress that there is currently no intelligence to suggest that there is any credible threat in relation to the messages.

“We are investigating this as a malicious communications offence and making further enquiries into the source of these emails. As part of these enquiries, a 20-year-old man has been arrested from an address in Huddersfield this morning.

“As a precaution, relevant safety and security advice is being provided to schools via local officers. We have also increased high visibility patrols within the district to provide further reassurance to our communities.”
