‘Acid assault’ exterior McDonald’s as cops in hazmat fits swarm and cordon off scene

A police scene is in place in Ashton town centre after a reported acid attack outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Tameside, with two men arrested on suspicion of assault

A police cordon has been set up in a town centre following reports of an acid attack outside McDonald’s. The incident is believed to have occurred outside the fast food outlet on Warrington Street in Ashton, Manchester at approximately 4pm today, Friday May 8.

A police cordon remains in position with the road sealed off from Bow Street and emergency services at the scene. Greater Manchester Police confirmed to the Manchester Evening News that two men have been detained on suspicion of assault after officers responded to a ‘hazmat incident’.

the Manchester Evening News. understands the alleged assault involved the use of a corrosive substance. The force confirmed a man in his 30s has been transported to hospital.

“Emergency services were called to a business premises on Warrington Road, Ashton-Under-Lyne at around 4pm following reports of a hazmat incident,” they said in a statement.

“One man aged in his 30s has been taken to hospital where he is currently being treated for his injuries, which are thankfully not deemed life threatening or life changing.

“Two men, aged in their 40s and 50s, have been arrested on suspicion of assault and remain in custody.

“A scene remains in place, and there is not believed to be any risk to the wider public.”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue confirmed that two fire crews also responded to the incident.
