Gen Z ditch principal meals for ‘cheaper’ various – and Doritos are right here to assist
More than half of Gen Z prefer ‘picky teas’ made up of classic finger foods over a traditional main meal — and the cost-effective snack dinner trend is taking hold across the UK.
Gen Z is redefining traditional eating with ‘picky teas’ as 68% often feel stuck in a food rut when deciding what to eat for dinner.
Research reveals that more than half of Gen Z favour ‘picky teas’, usually consisting of traditional finger foods, over a proper meal, with respondents eating them an average of three times a week.
In a survey of 2,000 adults, two-thirds said this alternative is quick and easy, while 22% said it’s perfect for sharing with friends. However, 26% said they enjoy snackable meals because of the cost with the total spent by Gen Z on eating out totalling around £2,400 a year, almost double what Boomers and Gen X spend at £1,482 and £1,539 respectively.
The study was commissioned by Doritos, which has launched ‘Doritos Loaded Month’. Throughout the month, Doritos is encouraging fans of the triangular crisp in London, Manchester and Glasgow to bring their own packet to over 200 vendors and have it transformed into a unique loaded meal for a fiver.
Elise McDonald, a spokesperson for the brand said: “We’re seeing a real shift in how people approach food, with more looking for flexible, informal meal occasions that still feel bold, satisfying and social.
“People want exciting flavour mash-ups, customisable toppings and food experiences that feel a little unexpected – and that’s exactly what Doritos Loaded Month delivers.
“It’s all about letting people explore new flavour combinations and textures in a way that fits their lifestyle.”
From grazing boards to picky bits, the study found the perfect adult nibbly dinner consists of crisps (55%), sausage rolls (48%), cheeses (48%) and dips (37%).
According to respondents, the ultimate ‘picky tea’ is made up of five different foods and 44% said they combine sweet, salty and spicy foods.
Elise McDonald added: “Doritos Loaded Month taps directly into the growing popularity of customisable food experiences that have taken off across social media – building on the ‘Bring Your Own’ trend with our ‘Bring Your Own Doritos’ mechanic.”
