Premier League WAG launches blistering assault on supervisor after relegation and World Cup snub
One Premier League player’s wife was left particularly unhappy as the final curtain came down on the season
The wife of West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has unleashed a blistering attack on Hammers boss Nuno Espirito Santo across social media. The Irons suffered relegation from the Premier League on Sunday, despite thrashing Leeds United 3-0.
Tottenham Hotspur’s narrow 1-0 victory over Everton ensured Roberto De Zerbi’s outfit clung onto 17th place to survive the drop instead. Areola was initially installed as West Ham’s No.1, replacing Mads Hermansen, when Nuno took charge in mid-September 2025 following Graham Potter’s departure.

However, the Frenchman, who featured in West Ham’s Europa Conference League triumph in 2023, was axed in January following a series of costly mistakes against Brighton and Nottingham Forest. Hermansen was duly restored to the starting lineup.
Nuno has now faced the fury of Areola’s wife, Marrion Valette. Her opening post featured the goalkeeper clutching the Europa Conference League trophy, accompanied by the message: “From a trophy to relegation. Thank you Potter for the start of the season and Nuno for the end.”
She subsequently shared a screenshot of her ticket from West Ham’s Conference League final triumph over Fiorentina, adding a broken-heart emoji.
In another story, displaying Areola clutching two Premier League awards for Save of the Month, she wrote: “Being dropped at the beginning of the season for no reason… After a very bad start then has made 20 games and all of a sudden “I’m really sorry you won’t start…” “Why?” “For no particular reason but I’m sorry.””
Another revealed how Areola boasts the highest save rate per 90 minutes in the Premier League. Across that image, she wrote: “Very sad for the fans (with a hammers emoji) Very frustrated for the family but always proud of you no matter what.”
Further posts emerged of Areola alongside numerous trophies and accolades from throughout his career, followed by three highlight packages of the goalkeeper in action for West Ham. The final story contained footage of Areola representing France, with Marrion adding beneath: “And NO World Cup this year thank you coach Nuno.”
The 33-year-old has failed to secure a place in France’s squad for the forthcoming World Cup, though he did earn selection in Didier Deschamps’ squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and for Euro 2024.
Areola arrived at West Ham on loan in July 2021 from Paris Saint-Germain before securing a permanent switch 12 months later. Whether the keeper will receive an opportunity to revive his West Ham career in the Championship, with or without Nuno in charge, remains uncertain.
Questioned immediately following relegation, the Irons manager was coy regarding his future. “It’s not about me,” Nuno said. “We are in a tough place and West Ham has to go back in the Premier League. But now we have to go through this period of sadness, understanding the frustration and anger of the fans.”
When pressed on whether there are any plans to discuss his future with West Ham, he said: “You keep insisting [to ask] me about that and my mind is not there, you understand? Today, tomorrow, if we have a press conference, next one, for sure we can speak about that. But today, it’s about understanding how tough it is.”
Nuno’s precarious future only compounds the turmoil at the club currently. The Hammers posted a £104.2m loss for the previous financial year and their demotion will inevitably trigger player departures, with skipper Jarrod Bowen and midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who only arrived for £42million from Southampton last summer, expected to depart.
