Arne Slot breaks silence on Liverpool sack as supervisor and membership situation statements

Arne Slot has been sacked as Liverpool boss after just two seasons and has released a statement about his departure, with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola the leading candidate to succeed him at Anfield

Arne Slot has swiftly spoken out following his dismissal by Liverpool just 12 months after winning the Premier League title.

As reported by transfers guru Fabrizio Romano, the Dutch coach, 47, said: “It’s been an amazing ride together with Liverpool, I am so grateful that we were able to win the league last season.” Slot lifted a record-equalling 20th top flight title in his first season at Anfield, only to finish fifth in his second and pay the price by losing his job.

The Premier League giants issued a comprehensive statement on Saturday afternoon confirming Slot’s removal from his role. Their announcement read: “Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way.

“Having joined the club in June 2024, Arne went on to deliver our 20th league title in his first season in charge, ending the 2024-25 campaign as LMA Manager of the Year having also guided the team to the Carabao Cup final and the last 16 of the Champions League.”, reports the Mirror.

“He subsequently oversaw Champions League qualification for a second successive season in 2025-26 as the Reds also reached the quarter-finals of the same competition.”

Liverpool’s owners were quoted saying: “That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying. The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful.

“As such, our gratitude for everything he has accomplished could not be higher, especially as it was supported by a work ethic, a dedication and a standard of expertise which further reinforced our belief that he is a pioneer in his profession.

“From the instant that we first met Arne, it was instantly apparent that he is someone who does not simply accept responsibility, he welcomes it. This was clear when he agreed to assume the role as head coach, when he led us to the Premier League title and throughout the campaign just concluded when he confronted substantial challenges and pressures.

“At the same time, we have jointly reached the conclusion that change is required in order for the club to continue progressing forward. Once more, it must be emphasised that this is not a decision which has been made casually, far from it.

“We would like to use this opportunity to formally acknowledge our gratitude for Arne, who will forever occupy a unique position in the history of this football club as the manager who secured Liverpool’s 20th league title.

“That achievement – made even more extraordinary as it came in his debut season in command – was founded on exceptional coaching and leadership each and every day.

“He also helped steer the club through one of the most challenging periods conceivable following the loss of Diogo. The empathy and decency he demonstrated throughout that period revealed a great deal about him as an individual.

“As such, we can only wish Arne well in the next stage of his coaching career, with our expectation being that he will continue to be successful. We do so in the knowledge that his Liverpool legacy is intact and will become yet more meaningful in the years and decades to come.

“Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.

“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”

Andoni Iraola stands as the overwhelming frontrunner to succeed Slot at the helm. Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoenes and Pierre Sage of Lens have also been mooted as potential candidates.
