Liverpool information: Reason for Arne Slot’s sack emerges as Virgil van Dijk makes calls for

Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot after a disappointing season and the reasons for the decision have emerged along with comments from club captain Virgil van Dijk

The dismissal of Arne Slot has sent shockwaves throughout Liverpool. Following a dismal campaign that witnessed the Reds stumble to a fifth-place finish, the Dutch manager was considered by FSG p to have reached his ceiling with the club.

Slot will forever be remembered for delivering the Reds their 20th top-flight crown. Yet those euphoric sun-kissed moments at Anfield in May 2025, as ecstatic supporters celebrated Liverpool clinching the Premier League, now feel like an age ago.

Twenty losses across all competitions this term simply eroded the once-unshakeable faith supporters had in Slot as Anfield shifted from a fortress of strength and unity into a poisonous atmosphere of jeers and discontent.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool acted on Slot’s reign due to the absence of identity that the Reds were displaying on the pitch.

Slot’s dismissal was also the consequence of Liverpool’s more seasoned stars, such as Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and Alexis Mac Allister, enduring worrying drops in form, reports the Mirror.

The report suggests that “in the eyes of the owners” Liverpool’s performances were lacking in pace and intensity.

It further stated that under Slot, the Reds had started playing a “dull brand of football” which ultimately led to a “mood of negativity at Anfield.”

The jeers directed at the head coach from the Anfield crowd after their draw with Chelsea earlier this month, along with the growing discontent around the club, left Slot with little room for manoeuvre.

The report indicates that FSG’s CEO of football Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes decided to sack the Premier League-winning coach following an end-of-season review.

Virgil van Dijk’s comments

Before Slot was dismissed by Liverpool, Van Dijk called for them to buckle down and restore the glory days to Anfield. Whoever succeeds Slot will undoubtedly have Van Dijk’s words echoing in his mind, fully aware of the enormous challenge ahead.

Speaking in the latest issue of the club’s ‘Walk On’ magazine, the Dutch skipper said: “I think it is an opportunity for other players to step up. It is not just an opportunity; it has to happen and it will happen. I’m not worried about that.

“It’s just taking responsibility. I think we have plenty of players that have those traits in them.

“And it’s now down to them and down to the manager to make sure it comes out, take their responsibility and enjoy it and embrace it as well because it’s an absolute privilege to lead and to feel that responsibility for this football club.

“The players we’ve got, in my eyes, are great players with a lot of quality. But I’ve often said that to play for Liverpool, you need more than just quality on the pitch. And that’s something you have to grow into.
