EuroMillions winner who saved cop’s life days earlier than win dies in ‘hit and run’

Dad-of-two and EuroMillions winner Anthony Canty, who was hailed a hero just days before his jackpot win after saving the life of a police officer, has tragically died after being knocked of his bike

A EuroMillions winner who saved the life of a police officer just days before winning the £1million jackpot has tragically died after being knocked off his bike. The incident is being treated as a suspected hit and run.

Anthony Canty, 39, made headlines back in 2020 after giving CPR to a police officer who had a heart attack on a bus. Just less than a month later, the father-of-two’s life changed for ever with the huge lottery win with his wife, Katie.

Tragically the hero lottery winner has now passed away after being involved in a collision on Maldon Road in Tiptree, Essex. Canty was reportedly knocked off his bike by a car on May 21 at around 6.30am.

Canty was rushed to hospital but sadly died four days later and has been named locally, according to the Sun. The suspected driver of the car reportedly fled the scene but did return later.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink and drugs, and failing to stop at the scene, Essex Police confirm.

The force are now appealing for witnesses to come forward and asking for footage of a black Ford KA being in the area on the morning of the incident.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: “Detectives continuing to investigate a serious collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle in Tiptree can confirm a man has sadly since died in hospital.

“Officers would still particularly like to hear from anyone who saw or has footage of a black Ford KA being driven in the area around the time of the collision that morning.

“If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us. Please quote 174 of 21 May.”

Canty’s story was covered widely after he saved the life of a police officer while on the bus home from work.
