Met Office energy reduce warning as heavy rain might spark flooding by 5pm immediately

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Highland and Strathclyde regions today as heavy rainfall threatens flooding, travel disruption and power cuts across Scotland – even as a third heatwave nears.

The Met Office says two regions of the UK should prepare for heavy rain that will bring travel chaos and flooding – even as a third heatwave approaches.

Weather experts are issuing warnings of harsh conditions from 5pm today through to Monday (July 6) morning with torrential downpours set to soak two areas.

Scattered showers are also expected across much of northern England and parts of Wales tomorrow, but the most severe rainfall is predicted for the Highlands and Eilean Siar as well as Strathclyde until 10am on Monday. A yellow warning has been issued for the region, indicating possible challenging conditions for drivers and potential flooding.

Public transport including bus and rail services may also face disruption with journey times likely to increase.

The Met Office has also cautioned that people should prepare for possible power outages.

A statement said: “People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”, reports the Mirror.

A Met Office forecast said: “It will be a wet spell for the West Highlands, with the heaviest and most persistent rain expected from Sunday afternoon through until Monday morning.

“20-40 mm is expected widely within the warning area through this period, with 50-75 mm in the most mountainous areas. There is a chance that the most exposed spots could see close to 100 mm.

“The rain is expected to become less heavy during Monday morning.”

Meanwhile, the Met Office has warned that another heatwave is heading towards the UK, with blistering temperatures of up to 34C potentially hitting the South East by Thursday or Friday.

The fresh forecast arrives as charts from weather experts WXCharts reveal sections of Britain could endure 30C or higher for a blazing six consecutive days from Tuesday through to Sunday.

The Met Office predicts temperatures will climb to 29C on Sunday, before edging towards the low 30s during the following week and culminating in a scorching 34C peak on Thursday or Friday across the South East. While it’s anticipated to be an extended period of sweltering conditions across parts of the UK, it won’t match the intensity and mugginess of last month’s heatwave, forecasters have noted.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: “We have got a heatwave on the way across parts of southern England and Wales.

“There will be highs of 29C tomorrow (Sunday) in the south. At the start of next week we will see temperatures approach the low 30s.

“The peak of the heat appears to be Thursday or Friday, 34C in the South East. By comparison to the heatwave we saw in June, this heatwave won’t be as hot and humid, but it will be a prolonged spell of hot weather which lasts around a week.”
