Liverpool have suffered a major transfer blow after being told one of their top midfield targets is ‘not for sale’.

The Reds’ search for a new midfielder has hit a problem after Crystal Palace reportedly made clear their position that Adam Wharton will not leave Selhurst Park this summer.

Wharton, 22, has been heavily linked with a transfer this summer after impressing in the middle of the park for the Eagles. However, the four-time England international’s form was not rewarded with a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Liverpool aren’t the only top Premier League club to have shown an interest in Wharton, with Manchester United and Manchester City both linked with his signature.

But according to The Athletic, City were told Wharton is not for sale this summer after enquiring about his availability. He is said to be among City’s list of midfield targets as Enzo Maresca looks to overhaul the engine room, but Palace have no interest in cashing in.

City have lost Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders so far this summer, with Nico Gonzalez also linked with an exit. However, they splashed a British record £116million on Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and have been linked with blockbuster moves for Enzo Fernandez and Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Meanwhile at Anfield, Andoni Iraola is yet to sign a new midfielder despite Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch’s form deserting them last season. And Curtis Jones is on the verge of joining Inter Milan in a £30m deal.

Liverpool’s priority target still remains PSG and France winger Bradley Barcola but are yet to strike a compromise on his £145m price tag.

Wharton joined Palace from Blackburn Rovers in the winter of 2024 in a £22m deal and is under contract at Selhurst Park until 2029.

He made 53 appearances in all competitions for the Eagles last season, scoring once and laying on seven assists as they won the Conference League a year after lifting the FA Cup.
