Inside World Humanoid Robot Games as boxing bots batter rivals and athletics information fall

Move over Usain Bolt, the Terminators have arrived – and they’re running faster, jumping higher, and occasionally bursting into massive fireballs!

If you thought the Olympics were wild, wait until you see the absolute carnage unfolding at the 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. It’s basically a real-life Skynet training camp, but with more tripping over and spontaneous combustion.

More than 2,000 metal athletes have descended on the Chinese capital to battle it out across 51 bonkers events. And if you’re looking for proof that the robot apocalypse is upon us, get this: exactly 666 teams are competing. You couldn’t make it up!

The undisputed star of the show is a terrifyingly fast piece of kit called Tiangong Ultra. The robo-sprinter left sprint legend Bolt in its exhaust fumes by blazing through the 100m in an insane 8.86 seconds, smashing the Jamaican’s iconic 9.58-second record to smithereens.

It didn’t stop there. No siree bob. The tireless machine then went on to obliterate the men’s 400m record (43.03 seconds), crossing the finish line in a blistering 38.15 seconds.

But it’s not just on the track where the turbo tin cans are flexing their hydraulic muscles. Over in the high jump, one bot launched itself an incredible 2.88m into the air – well past the human world record of 2.45m.

Meanwhile, in the boxing ring, bots are quite literally battering the microchips out of each other in spectacular metal-on-metal brawls. But the carnage doesn’t stop there.

The games include some truly bizarre sights you’d never expect a hunk of metal to tackle – from brutal games of tug-of-war, to high-stakes breakdancing where one wrong spin sends a detachable arm flying into row Z. They’re even competing in simulated firefighting events… which, frankly, comes in handy considering how many of the bloody things keep bursting into flames.

There’s also ping-pong, tennis and football – and if that doesn’t float your boat, they’re even testing out the robots’ ‘gentle’ sides with simple housekeeping tasks and let me tell you, watching a machine built like a brick outhouse try to dust a shelf without smashing the place to smithereens is comedy gold.

However, before you start bowing down to our new robot overlords, you should know that they still have a few hilariously explosive kinks to work out – you know, besides the fires.

Social media is flooded with viral clips of these multi-million-pound machines completely stacking it. Some have tripped over their own robotic feet, others have blindly face-planted straight into safety barriers, and a few have gone totally rogue, wandering off-track to startle the front-row spectators.

The sight of smoking, malfunctioning robots being carted off an athletics track on actual human-sized stretchers has had crowds in stitches – and watching a robo-sprinter disintegrate mid-race while another scuttles past him like a panicking mechanical toddler who just stole a biscuit was worth the ticket price alone.

Organisers claim the games are all about testing bots for future use in “household services”, “industrial tasks” and “firefighting”. Yeah, right!

Let’s be real: we’re all just here for the giggles as these motorised metal scarecrows glitch out like a broken Xbox. But tread carefully, folks – the robot uprising is coming, and we’d better pray they don’t hold a grudge for every time we snorted with laughter at the sight of them going down like a sack of spanners.
