Michael Carrick learns essential lesson as Man Utd held by last-gasp wondergoal

Manchester United suffered late heartbreak as Michael Carrick’s side conceded a stunning equaliser at the death as Everton rescued a 2-2 draw

Manchester United conceded a stunning equaliser with one of the final kicks of the game as Michael Carrick’s side were held 2-2 by Everton at the death.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring just one minute into the second half with a brilliant solo effort, curling the ball into the far corner from 20 yards, but United’s failure to find a second goal gave Everton hope they would find an equaliser, and David Moyes’ side did late on through Tyrique George.

Benjamin Sesko, just like he did last season, bounced off the bench to put the visitors back in front but there was a twist in the tale as Ainsley Maitland-Niles found the top corner from 25 yards on his debut to steal a point at the death.

Carrick named an unchanged side from the resounding 5-2 victory over Ipswich last Sunday and the Red Devils looked to pick up where they left off as Bruno Fernandes hit the bar in the opening minutes.

The captain was at the centre of everything that happened in the first half as United dominated the opening stages. Youri Tielemans was the first to test Jordan Pickford from distance while Fernandes and Cunha both fired in efforts that forced last-ditch defending.

United’s frontline looked full of energy with Marcus Rashford in particular playing directly and getting plenty of success down the left against makeshift right-back Merlin Rohl. Rashford’s pace was a danger on the wing as he continuously reached the byline but his final delivery was lacking.

That was the only complaint of United’s attack in the first half as time after time openings were forced but the final pass to put the ball on a plate for those making runs went missing.

However, Everton had the best chance of the opening 45 minutes as Thierno Barry couldn’t turn a free header on target. The Toffees’ target man ghosted off the back of Harry Maguire but couldn’t stretch far enough to direct Rohl’s cross into the back of the net.

United were waiting on their creators to make the difference in the first half, and it took just one minute of the second 45 for Mbeumo to show his brilliance to open the scoring.

The winger received the ball wide on the right from Kobbie Mainoo before driving between two Everton defenders and whipping the ball into the far bottom corner from 20 yards.

Mbeumo’s strike opened the game up as Everton looked to find an equaliser while United’s fluid frontline found themselves with plenty of room to counter attack into.

As Everton looked to be the side asking the questions, it was James Tarkowski down the other end who produced an incredible last-ditch tackle to stop Matheus Cunha passing the ball into an empty net from five yards out following another mazy run from Rashford.

Rashford’s relentless play soon forced Rohl to drag him down and get himself into the book. The England international was replaced on 70 minutes for the fresh legs of Patrick Dorgu, and has made an excellent start to his United redemption thanks to Carrick’s input.

But without Rashford, United were light on the left with Dorgu having no impact going forward, before being sucked in and failing to follow Tyrique George for the equaliser in the 83rd minute.

As Everton moved the ball left to right, Dorgu got dragged in to defend centrally when he should have kept his shape, which would have blocked the pass to George from Hayden Hackney. The former Chelsea winger unleashed a powerful strike which Senne Lammens was unable to keep out, high at his near post.

However, with two minutes to go, Sesko was United’s super sub as he headed in Luke Shaw’s cross on his own from six-yards out with two minutes of normal time to go.

But Maitland-Niles curled a stunning effort into the top corner from 25 yards to snatch a point at the death on his Everton debut.

United again threw away points, albeit in stunning circumstances, to again ship two goals in a game – it’s now six goals conceded in just three games to start the season.
