Brits reveal prime Christmas stresses with price and cooking woes main the best way
A new survey shows the top 10 Christmas stresses – and it’s not good news for Brits who are feeling the pressure
The cost of Christmas is the biggest worry for cash-strapped Brits, a recent survey reveals. Nearly one in three of us rank food shopping, lack of oven space and missing parcels among our top “anxiety triggers”.
Other festive frustrations include lazy partners, insufficient seating, unhelpful teenagers and pine needles scattered everywhere. However, it’s the staggering expense of the season that tops the list of Yuletide stresses, followed by the mammoth food shop and inadequate oven space.
Even participating in the office secret Santa can awaken our inner Scrooge. For some, the holiday season feels more like Christ-MESS, with one in ten irked by discarded wrapping paper left strewn about.
A whopping eight out of ten feel there’s just too much to consider and remember, with over half regularly experiencing Christmas brain fog. Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings explains: “Christmas is one of the most emotionally charged times of the year. We’re juggling dozens of ‘mental tabs’ at once – from remembering gift lists and managing family expectations to planning meals, travel, and budgets.”
She adds: “This constant cognitive multitasking puts our brains into a near-permanent state of alert. Even the small decisions, like choosing the right festive foods or timing the shop just right, stack up until they feel overwhelming.”, reports the Mirror.
“When our mental resources are stretched like that, our stress levels naturally rise. At its heart, the anxiety many of us feel isn’t about Christmas itself, but the pressure we put on ourselves to create a perfect moment for everyone else. Understanding that – and lightening the load where we can – helps us reclaim the joy of the season.”
The research involving 2,000 participants by SPAR supplier A. F.
Blakemore revealed that the average Brit endures 250 nerve-wracking moments during the Christmas countdown, with Sunday 14 December at 4pm identified as the peak stress time.
A worrying 22% confessed they only begin to genuinely relax and stop fretting on Christmas Eve itself.
However, it appears the tension doesn’t entirely disappear, as a staggering six in ten (60%) have been forced to dash out on Christmas morning to grab something they’d overlooked or failed to plan for.
The main culprits for these frantic festive runs include milk (39%), additional wrapping paper (32%), more Sellotape (28%), batteries for toys (22%) and a last-minute present for an unexpected visitor (20%).
Despite all the hassle, an impressive 87% eagerly anticipate Christmas, with 28% of Brits confessing they prefer to mark the occasion in grand style, complete with delicious food, festive decorations and most of the traditional trimmings.
Perhaps by sidestepping these 10 Christmas pressure points, you can savour a stress-free festive period!
