BREAKING Man ‘combating for his life’ after being present in Manchester metropolis centre as police tape off space

A man has been found in a critical condition in Manchester city centre with police taping off the area while an investigation gets underway.

Greater Manchester Police said the man has suffered life-threatening injures and is currently in a critical condition in hospital. A woman in her 30s has been arrested and officers are in attendance on Back Piccadilly and Spear Street, between Piccadilly Gardens and the Northern Quarter.

A number of officers are manning a cordon this morning (November 7). Police first attended the area last night when they were called at 5.44pm to a man with life-threatening injuries.

GMP says officers were called out to a second incident nearby less than an hour later. Police were called to reports of a male being chased through the city by several people at 6.23pm.

The suspects were said to be making threats and the group fled after the person being chased took shelter in a restaurant. No further arrests have been made.

Police have enforced two orders for additional policing powers after the two incidents. A Section 60 order gives police extra powers to carry out stop searches and a Section 34 dispersal order also allows officers to order people to leave the area for a period of time.

Superintendent Nicola Williams, of GMP’s City of Manchester district, said: “These orders have been put in place overnight and they give officers additional powers which will be utilised to prevent any further incidents or the carrying of weapons.

“We will have our dedicated Piccadilly Gardens policing neighbourhood team who are patrolling the area to provide reassurance and visibility to our communities. If you have any concerns or any information, then please speak to those officers who will reassure and respond to any queries.

“These powers are crucial to preventing potential further offences or instances of violence in the community. If anyone has any information, then we need to hear from you.”

It comes as the Christmas markets open today, including at nearby Piccadilly Gardens.
