University Challenge viewers were left in hysterics as they all pointed out the same thing about host Amol Rajan during Wednesday’s Christmas special.
The 42-year-old returned to our screens to present the semi-final of the festive all-star season.
The latest episode saw UCL up go up against Keble College, Oxford.
Tom Dyckhoff, Vivienne Parry, Lynne Truss, Maryam Moshiri made up UCL’s team, meanwhile Paul Johnson, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Anne-Marie Imafidon and Caroline Criado Perez made up their opponents.
Many took to social media while watching to point out that Amol was saying one particular phrase A LOT to the contestants.
For example, Amol asked: ‘The Plethodontidae are a family of salamanders that have notably lost which major pair of organs over the course…?’

Team Keble buzzed, but unfortunately they got it wrong, and Amol told UCL: ‘You can hear more of the question but you may not confer.’
He continued: ‘… over the course of their evolution.
‘The ordinarily vital function of these organs is instead achieved through simple cutaneous diffusion. This is exchange of molecules through the skin, rather than in specialised structures, such as alveoli.’
Parry turned to discuss with Truss and Amol shouted: ‘You may not confer!’
Many found the phrase hilarious, with one writing on X: ‘@amolrajan YOU MAY NOT CONFER !!,’ with laughing emojis.
‘Feels like @amolrajan is on the verge of handing out detentions to the UCL team for their continued blooming conferring! #UniversityChallenge.’
‘DO, NOT, CONFER… #UniversityChallenge.’
‘Crumbs Amol Rajan is very shouty on #UniversityChallenge – makes me wince everytime he yells “you must not confer!”‘
Many rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share how funny they thought it was that Amol kept telling them off
‘Did anyone else catch that side eye from Amol after the latest ” You May Not Confer!” … he’s so sick of their S**t.’
‘YOU MAY NOT CONFERRRR!’
‘Christmas univeristy challenge will be known only for YOU MAY NOT CONFER!!!’
‘They all got shouted at a lot tonight.’
‘I absolutely love when amol Rajan gets fiesty on #UniversityChallenge.’
‘A piece of Jazz is played on the music round. Then Quizmaster Amol Rajan shouts out “You May Not Confer.”‘
Last Tuesday saw Amol back as a presenter, with several famous faces on the panel.
Teams included alumni from UCL and Leeds who were desperate for a second chance to be crowned University Challenge champions – including BBC News presenter Maryam Moshiri and impressionist Alistair McGowan.
But fans were left disappointed and claimed the show was ‘dumbed down’, with some even taking to X to share their thoughts.
One penned: ‘The magic of Christmas University Challenge is that the viewer can answer more easier questions than usual… #UniversityChallenge.’
Another shared: ‘Love alumni #UniversityChallenge. It’s easer than the normal one and I come into my own! I’m the winner on all low brow stuff in our house.’
A third commented: ‘Crikey think I got about 20 right tonight which is not unusual #UniversityChallenge.’
Others called out Amol for repeatedly scolding the teams and barking ‘no conferring!’ as he told them off again and again.
One viewer wrote: ‘#universitychallenge stop shouting at them, Amol,’ while someone else said: ‘#universitychallenge ooh he’s grumpy tonight isn’t he old host boy!’
