A former schoolteacher has been convicted of a series of offences, abusing his position to engage in sexual activity with two pupils.

Anthony Redmond, 54, from Fort Austin Avenue, Plymouth, faced trial at Plymouth Crown Court following a police investigation. He denied a string of charges – five counts of abuse of a position of trust by engaging in sexual activity with one girl under 18, two counts of the same offence with a second girl and one count of indecency with a child.

The crimes spanned a period in the 2000s when Redmond was employed as a geography teacher at a Plymouth school. The incidents occurred at his residence at the time, on school grounds, in a hotel and another location. One episode took place in a school cupboard, reports Plymouth Live.

One of the victims testified at Plymouth Crown Court, stating she felt “used and worthless” due to Redmond’s actions. The court heard that Redmond had taken both victims’ virginity.

Despite Redmond’s denial of the charges, the jury unanimously found him guilty of all offences.

Redmond’s defence lawyer, Ali Rafiti, requested a pre-sentence report, highlighting his client’s previously good character.

Judge Robert Linford concurred and granted Redmond bail, scheduling his sentencing for February 10.

Judge Linford expressed his gratitude to the jury for their focus and diligence, highlighting that they had started sitting on the trial in December and had resumed after the Christmas and New Year break to continue hearing evidence.

He stated that if they were summoned for jury duty in the next 10 years, they could be excused if they wished.
