Selhurst practice derails as 3 main rail operators warn ‘do not travel’ over lengthy delays

Train passengers have been issued “do not travel” by the UK’s largest railway franchise after a train derailed this morning (February 4).

Rail operators Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express urged passengers not to travel because of “multiple incidents”.

This comes after a train derailed this morning near the deport in Selhurst. Special teams from Network Rail are investigating the train derailment but confirm there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Network Rail Kent and Sussex wrote on X: “We’re responding to a suspected derailment involving a train near Selhurst Depot, which is blocking the lines towards Norwood Junction and London Bridge.

“This is causing disruption to services in the area. There are no confirmed injuries at this time. Our teams are on site and specialist staff are supporting the response while the incident is investigated. We’ll provide further updates as soon as possible.”

The three operators hit with delays as a result have all posted messages to passengers with reports of some being up to 60 minutes late.

Southern told passengers: “If you are travelling on our network today, your journey may be delayed and you may need to use an alternative route to reach your destination. If you can, please delay your journey until later today. Please check your train before travelling and allow an additional 60 minutes for your journey.”
