A man and a schoolgirl girl have died after fire erupted at a Chinese takeaway – sparked by an air fryer.

The girl, 11, and man, 45, were killed after the blaze broke out at an address in Grimoldby, Lincolnshire, on Wednesday morning. Five others, including two children, were also rushed to hospital. A woman in her 40s currently remains in a serious condition.

The horror unfolded at around 6am at The Golden Phoenix takeaway in Grimoldby, near Louth. An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched discovering the fire was caused accidentally by an air fryer igniting nearby objects.

Chief Fire Officer Mark Baxter, of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Upon arrival at the scene, crews were met with a well developed fire, which has tragically claimed the lives of two people, left another in a critical condition, and injured several others.

“Following fire investigations in conjunction with Lincolnshire Police and the regional fire investigations dog, we have determined this was started by an air fryer igniting nearby objects.

“This will be an extremely difficult time for the family, their friends, and the tight-knit community, and our thoughts and condolences go out to them all.”

During the incident six ambulance crews and two paramedics rushed to the scene of the fire. Fire crews attended the blaze from Louth, Alford, Mablethorpe and Market Rasen and Binbrook.

An East Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 6.22am on Wednesday, February 18, to a property fire at Manby Middlegate in Grimoldby. We sent six ambulance crews and two paramedics in solo response cars, supported on scene by a senior manager and critical care teams.”

They added: “The air ambulance also attended. Four patients were taken to Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby via ambulances, and one patient was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham via air ambulance.”

The Daily Star previously reported on a fire which claimed the lives of five people in a horrific flat blaze in Spain. The fire started in the storage room of a five-storey apartment block in Manlleu, a town north of Barcelona, regional authorities in Catalonia said.

For reasons not yet known, the victims could not escape the attic storage room, authorities said. What caused the blaze is now under investigation. Catalan police said the five dead were all young people and that they did not live in the building.

Catalan President Salvador Illa said he was “shocked” by the news and sent his condolences to the families. The mayor of Manlleu, Arnau Rovira, declared three days of mourning for the tragedy, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported .
