A seven-year-old girl and 40-year-old man suffered less serious injuries, authorities said, whilst two lorry drivers also received treatment for minor injuries.
Spain’s 112 emergency service said the incident was “extremely serious”. Pictures of the crash show twisted remains of the van scattered across the roadway.
Broken glass from the collision can also be seen littered on the surface of the A-7 motorway.
Emergency services attended the tragic incident, including firefighters in case they needed to pull people from wrecked vehicles.
A comprehensive investigation is currently in progress, but preliminary indications suggest that distraction may have contributed to the fatal collision, as reported by The Spanish Eye.
Following the accident, mile-long queues developed as the right-hand lane of the motorway was shut down to allow emergency services to operate at the scene.
