NUCLEAR NIGHTMARE: Iran power plant hit in airstrike sparking ‘major disaster’ fears

  • Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant has been struck in a devastating airstrike that killed a security guard and sparked fears of a “major nuclear disaster”.
  • The facility, located 750 kilometres south of Tehran, has now been attacked four times since conflict began on February 28. The latest strike at 8:30am local time damaged auxiliary buildings but didn’t harm the main infrastructure.
  • The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed “no increase in radiation levels was reported” after the attack. Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi voiced “deep concern” and stressed nuclear plants “must never be attacked”.
  • Russian representative Mikhail Ulyanov slammed the IAEA’s response as inadequate. He warned: “The missile exploded just 200 metres from an operational nuclear reactor – this poses a real risk of a major nuclear disaster.”
  • Any contamination at the Persian Gulf coastal site could enter seawater and impact marine ecosystems. More critically, it could affect desalination plants that Gulf states depend on for drinking water.
  • Even a limited radioactive release could have serious consequences for water security across the region, potentially affecting millions of people.
