Brits heading to northern Spain have been issued a warning after a major airport announced a month-long closure – from tomorrow. Travellers are facing severe disruption with all flights officially cancelled from tomorrow at Santiago-Rosalia de Castro airport.

The major travel hub will close from April 23 until May 27 to allow for essential runway resurfacing works. During the five-week period, the airport will be completely closed to all air traffic, meaning no take-offs or landings will be permitted.

The total closure is expected to impact hundreds of journeys, particularly as it coincides with the busy May half-term holiday when many British families plan their spring getaways.

A spokesman said: “During this period, the airport will be closed to all air traffic, and no takeoffs or landings will take place.”

Santiago-Rosalia de Castro is the busiest airport in the Galicia region and the second-busiest in northern Spain, serving as a vital gateway for international tourists and pilgrims travelling to the historic city of Santiago de Compostela.

Several major airlines operate regular flights from the hub, including British Airways, Ryanair, and Vueling. All affected carriers will be forced to suspend or reroute their operations until the construction programme is completed.

Spanish airport operator Aena has urged passengers to check their travel plans immediately, although most travel companies have been aware of the move for a while.

In a statement addressing the disruption, the operator advised that anyone with questions regarding their flight status, schedule changes, or possible rebooking options should contact their respective airlines directly to organise alternative arrangements.

The runway closure adds to existing travel woes for holidaymakers heading to Spain this season. Passengers are already navigating significant disruptions nationwide due to an indefinite strike by airport ground staff. Employees from Groundforce and Menzies have been staging industrial action over an ongoing pay dispute since the end of March.

This separate disruption is currently affecting 12 major airports across the country, including highly popular holiday destinations such as Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante, Palma, Ibiza, Malaga, and the Canary Islands.
