Sir Keir Starmer has enlisted Gordon Brown as a special envoy on global finance in a reshuffle following the local elections. The Prime Minister has recalled the former premier as he clings to power in the wake of Labour’s thrashing in Thursday’s polls.

Downing Street stated that Sir Keir is committed to enhancing the nation’s security and resilience, and “in this role, Gordon Brown will advise on how global finance cooperation can help to achieve this”. Sir Keir has also appointed former deputy Labour leader Baroness Harriet Harman as his adviser on women and girls.

Lady Harman will collaborate with ministers on efforts to combat violence against women and girls, improve job prospects and boost representation in parliament and public life.

She will work alongside the head of the civil service to “drive a shift in culture” across the civil service and ministerial offices, No 10 announced.

This comes as Sir Keir faces growing demands to step down following Labour’s local elections massacre, reports the Express.

The party lost over 1,000 councillors across England, and was toppled from power in Wales for the first time ever.

Numerous Labour backbenchers have publicly suggested that Sir Keir should either resign or set a timeline for his exit.

The Prime Minister will aim to use a significant speech on Monday and then the King’s Speech on Wednesday to try to reboot his premiership.
