An investigation has been launched after gunshots were fired at a man in a street. An armed attacker discharged a weapon on Kenwood Avenue, at the junction with St Andrew’s Drive, Leigh at approximately 11pm on Friday evening (May 15).

Emergency services raced to the location and a man, in his 40s, was rushed to hospital with bullet wounds. Police confirmed his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. The perpetrator fled the scene in the direction of Manchester Road.

No arrests have been made, according to a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police. Officers emphasised the shooting outside a residence was thought to be ‘isolated’, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Enquiries are now taking place at the scene. St Andrew’s Drive has been sealed off at the junction with Kenwood Avenue.

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Bell, from GMP’s Wigan and Leigh district, said: “We are investigating a firearms discharge that occurred overnight, and I want to reassure the community in the local area that this appears to be an isolated incident.

“I understand that incidents of this nature can cause concern among residents and since it occurred, we have taken all steps necessary to keep our investigation moving at pace. We have increased our presence in the area also with officers out on patrol.

“They are there for your safety but please speak to them if you have any concerns at all or information that might help with our investigation.

“This type of criminality does not belong on our streets. People should be safe and well in their own homes and we will be doing everything we can to bring those responsible to justice.”

The police are keen to speak with anyone who has information about the shooting. They’re also interested in speaking to anyone who may have doorbell, CCTV or dash cam footage.
