A zoo has closed its doors for the final time, with the much-loved attraction home to a variety of animals, from meerkats to zebras, all now relocated across the country
A beloved family zoo in Devon has been forced to close its doors, leaving the local community “devastated” after it served as a treasured part of their lives for over 17 years.
The popular attraction was home to a myriad of animals, from meerkats and zebras to flamingos and wild cats, all of which have now been rehomed across the country.
Despite the relocation process being conducted as “safely and responsibly” as possible, according to the park’s statement, locals were left heartbroken by their departure. Axe Valley Wildlife Park, situated near Axminster in Devon, was a favourite spot for a family day out in the region, offering an exciting opportunity for children to engage with and learn about animals from all corners of the world.
In addition to exploring the zoo, visitors could also enjoy some quality time with their preferred animals. Children aged seven and above even had the chance to step into the shoes of a zookeeper for the day. However, these offerings weren’t enough to secure the park’s future, reports the Mirror.
After striving to keep the business afloat, the park, which first opened its gates in 2008, announced its closure in October 2025 following 17 “unforgettable” years. The decision was attributed to the park becoming “financially unviable for us to continue operating”.
Their statement read: “It is with a heavy heart that we share some sad news. Our much-loved Family Zoo will be closing on Friday, 10th October 2025.
Collective heartbreak
“As many of you may have heard in the news, we are not the only business facing these difficult times. Unfortunately, it has become financially unviable for us to continue operating.”
It added: “When we opened our doors 17 years ago, we could never have envisaged the incredible adventure that lay before us, the thousands of fantastic guests, educational visits, and devoted members who became part of our zoo family. We are so proud of the wide variety of animals we’ve cared for over the years, each one holding a special place in our hearts (we know many of you have your favourites too!).”
The announcement also recognised the “love, dedication, and passion” displayed by staff towards the creatures, alongside the friendly and hospitable way they welcomed guests. Residents and frequent visitors quickly flocked to the Facebook post revealing the closure, swamping the comments with their heartbreak, while others seized the chance to reflect on beloved memories.
One commenter posted: “Well that sucks. That’s me re-evaluating any trips to Axminster then.
“You guys were absolutely amazing. Truly gutted to hear this.”
Countless visitors have revealed the Wildlife Park was their sole motivation for travelling to the area initially, with many declaring they now have scant reason to venture back to Axminster after its shuttering. What fate awaits the land where the creatures once wandered remains uncertain, though local inhabitants will surely be monitoring future plans closely, hoping it delivers something equally treasured to their neighbourhood.
