Edinburgh locals looking to shout on the Ivory Coast are about to have their own pub, kitted out with cuisine, music and special African Guinness from the French-speaking nation
An Irish pub is flipping its flags after a joke about becoming an Ivory Coast-supporting boozer for the World Cup went too far. Biddy Mulligans in Edinburgh has ordered “hundreds” of African Guinness bottles, sourced grub from an indigenous company and even learned the French speaking nation’s football chants.
As many of life’s great pleasures do, the transformation of the popular pub started as a joke. With Ireland out of the World Cup, Biddy’s clever social media team quipped about switching allegiances to the Ivory Coast due to the flags being the same once flipped.
However, the comment section of the TikTok post was flooded with locals excited at the prospect of Edinburgh’s first Ivory Coast-themed hostelry. And there were also a few disappointed it was a joke.

Responding to the massive online reaction, Biddy’s has committed to the bit and will even play Ivory Coast music before and after each game. But it stopped short of changing the commentary to French.
The popular boozer said in the “apology” video: “Hundreds of thousands of people commented they were upset we were not actually turning Biddy Mulligans into an Ivory Coast pub.
“People were upset we weren’t actually getting food from the Ivory Coast in so we have partnered with a brand who are going to send us food straight from the source. We have actually ordered hundreds of African Guinness bottles. We won’t have French commentary on but we will have Ivory Coast music on before and after the game.”
The barman added: “Biddy Mulligans is Edinburgh’s first actual Ivory Coast pub.”
It comes as Harry Maguire has reportedly landed a new World Cup role after the Manchester United defender was snubbed by Thomas Tuchel. The 33-year-old is one of several high-profile players to have been controversially left out of the England squad by Tuchel for the tournament in North America.
Alongside his United team-mate Luke Shaw, who also missed out, Maguire played a starring role in turning around United’s form under Michael Carrick to finish 3rd in the Premier League. But despite his form over the second half of the campaign and him being an integral part of England’s deep runs in recent international tournaments, Maguire has been left at home in place of Dan Burn and Jarell Quansah.
However, Maguire will still reportedly have a role to play this summer with it reported by The Athletic that Maguire will likely feature on Netflix’s ‘The Rest is Football’ show.
