Virgin Media takes on Plusnet and EE with ‘lowest ever worth’ for 1Gb broadband

Virgin Media has kicked offf a new broadband sale by slashing the price of its fastest speeds to 87p per day

Virgin is offering a hefty price cut on it 1,130Mbps fibre broadband.

Virgin Media is taking on rival providers like Plusnet and EE with a new deal that’s seen its fastest broadband fall to a record low price. Virgin’s ‘blazing-fast’ Gig1 Fibre Broadband delivers speeds of up to 1,130Mbps and is now more than £70 cheaper.

It’s been reduced from £29.99 to £26.99 per month, the equivalent of roughly 87p per day across a 31-day month. Virgin says this is the ‘lowest ever price’ for its Gig1 plan, with the discount providing a total saving of £72 over the 24-month contract.

It also provides Virgin’s fastest internet connection, which allows customers to download a full HD film in less than 30 seconds or a 50GB PlayStation 5 game in less than seven minutes. To put this in perspective, the same game will take more than 90minutes to download on a 70Mbps connection.

Virgin’s Gig1 broadband is also ideal for households that frequently stream on apps like Netflix, or for gamers playing online. There is one downside, though, as Virgin has already announced that Gig1 customers will see their bills rise by £4 each year.

The £26.99 rate will increase to £30.99 from April 2027 and £34.99 from April 2028. It’s also worth noting that available speeds vary by location, so prospective customers should use Virgin’s postcode checker to see if they’re eligible for Gig1 speeds, reports the Express.

Virgin Media has reduced its Gig1 Fibre Broadband to the ‘lowest ever price’ of £26.99 per month, saving £72 across the 24-month term.

When looking at rival providers’ latest deals, it’s clear that Virgin’s £26.99 Gig1 deal is worth considering. Over at Plusnet, the fastest speeds available are 900Mbps with the brand’s Full Fibre 900 plan, which costs a higher £31.99.

While slower and more expensive than Virgin, this also comes with a £100 reward card for new customers and may be available to more people as Plusnet uses BT’s Openreach network. EE actually offers faster speeds than Virgin with its 1.6Gbps Premium Broadband, but this comes in at a far higher £45.99.

It’s also worth checking whether it’s cheaper to switch to an alternative network provider. A growing number of so-called alt-nets continue to emerge across the UK, with many undercutting the big-name brands on price.

For instance, Community Fibre, which delivers internet access throughout London and select south east locations, is now offering 1Gbps speed for £25 plus the first three months for free. This package also guarantees that prices won’t increase during the contract period.

But do customers really need these speeds? While 1Gbps downloads sound appealing, it’s worth ensuring they are genuinely required before signing up to a long-term contract.

As a rough guide, a couple living in a flat and streaming Netflix every night should manage perfectly well with speeds of around 100Mbps. Those with larger households who are working from home, downloading films and playing blockbuster games should look at speeds of at least 300Mbps.

Bear in mind, broadband is just like a road – the more traffic travelling along it, the slower it becomes. By installing 1Gbps fibre, there is essentially a motorway running into the house rather than a B road.
