A nurse died in her own hospital after being struck by a speeding motorist as she walked home from a night shift. Jiaya Zheng, 28, was still wearing her scrubs when she was mowed down by a Cadillac in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday morning.
Her final moments were captured on CCTV footage and she can be seen walking just a block away from NYU Langone-Brooklyn Hospital, where she worked as a medical- surgical unit nurse.
She is seen patiently waiting at traffic lights before crossing the road, at which point the motor ploughs into her without slowing down. Medics rushed her to the hospital where she worked but she was tragically pronounced dead despite their best efforts.
Eyewitness Antonio Perez told News 12 Brooklyn: “I heard the bang. Her bag was over here, and they left her there. The car just kept on, it never stopped for nothing at all.”
A worker at a nearby deli told The New York Daily News: “The lady was waiting at the light and somebody come in the car and hit her. They were speeding. I opened the store and I had customers waiting and they heard someone got into an accident.
“When my customer step out they saw the lady in the street and we called 911. I feel so bad. I couldn’t handle seeing that. It was very bad.”
Colleagues said Jiaya, who lived about a mile from the hospital, was “always positive and in a good mood”. Hospital spokesman James Iorio said: “This is a tragic loss, and we extend our sincere condolences to her family, loved ones, and colleagues.
“Our nurses play an essential role in caring for others with compassion and dedication, and this loss is being felt across our entire community.”
The horror happened just after 7.30am near 55th Street and Third Avenue in Brooklyn. is the 11th person killed in a hit-and-run on a two-mile stretch of Third Avenue in the past 12 years, road safety campaigners said. The driver has not been caught.
