Girl, 5, dies simply days after all of the sudden falling sick as probe launched into loss of life

An inquest has been launched into the death of a five-year-old girl, which will investigate whether earlier treatment could have been provided for a medical condition that her family was unaware of until she fell ill.

The inquest opening at Swansea’s Guildhall into the tragic death of Aria Rose George revealed that the young girl, who lived with her parents in Cimla, Neath, sadly passed away at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff on September 27, 2024.

She had no known medical conditions, but during the week beginning September 23, 2024, she fell ill and was taken to her GP practice and then to Neath Port Talbot Hospital for treatment. She was given medication before being sent home.

Regrettably, her condition did not improve, the inquest heard, leading her parents to take her back to the hospital, where it was decided that she should be transferred to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for a CT scan, reports Wales Online.

It was found that she was suffering from a global intracerebral bleed with hydrocephalus. Additionally, a CT Thorax revealed pulmonary emboli.

Preliminary results and the clinical picture were consistent with acute myeloid leukaemia, according to discussions with haematology.

After consulting with senior medical teams involving the haematologists, neurosurgeons and critical care team, it was decided in Aria’s best interests to place her in “supportive comfort care.”

She was made comfortable overnight, and the following day received palliative care with her parents by her side.

Aria tragically continued to decline and was declared dead at 1.38pm on September 27, 2024 by consultant Dr Richard Skone.

Her provisional cause of death has been recorded as intracerebral haemorrhage (non traumatic) and acute myeloid leukaemia.

Senior coroner Aled Gruffydd said an investigation needed to be carried out to examine whether earlier treatment could have been provided, and stated it was in the public interest to ascertain the facts surrounding her death.

He adjourned the inquest until April 29, 2026, and offered his “deepest condolences” to Aria’s family.
