Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw by Tottenham on Saturday afternoon as they were forced to settle for a point after leading 2-0 with just ten minutes to go
Manchester United appeared to be sailing towards victory having weathered the early second-half onslaught from Spurs on Saturday lunchtime.
And had you informed Patrick Dorgu and his colleagues they would depart with merely a single point – they would have felt let down. As events unfolded, United emerged grateful it wasn’t a loss.
Mathys Tel’s deflected effort and Richarlison’s deft header appeared to have wrapped up triumph for Spurs and brought United’s unbeaten streak to an end.
Nevertheless, a dramatically late Matthijs de Ligt header salvaged a point and preserved United’s unbeaten record since their defeat to Brentford.
Dorgu made it plain that there was no celebration after rescuing a draw. “I think it was two lost as we were leading until ten minutes to go,” the Danish defender revealed, reports the Manchester Evening News.
“Obviously it was good to come back and show team spirit but we are disappointed in not winning the game.”
For United it felt like déjà vu. At Nottingham Forest the previous week, United entered half-time with a one-goal lead, threw it away and then salvaged it in the dying moments.
Against Spurs, the outcome was more extreme but the blueprint remained depressingly familiar. Speaking to TNT Sport after the match, De Ligt conceded that United were knackered in the second half – a view Dorgu shared. “Yeah, I think it was a tough game for everyone.
“Obviously they play very direct so it was hard for the defenders to always track runs. It was a competitive game.”
Having secured another point, United now enter the latest international break in better form than they were just a month ago. Whilst the Sunderland triumph was celebrated, it was difficult to determine whether that represented a turning point or merely a one-off.
Ultimately, it marked the beginning of a positive streak that extends into November. Looking back on the atmosphere in the squad heading into that break, Dorgu was eager to emphasise that morale remains buoyant for United and their players.
“We are unbeaten in five games so we are still feeling good,” Dorgu said. “We are not losing games so, now, we need to just keep bouncing back and get the next one after the internationals.”
