Brooklyn Beckham’s failed soccer profession as he opens up on strain of being David’s son
David Beckham’s sons have all followed in their parents footsteps, but his brother Brooklyn ended his football career after feeling the weight of his famous surname
David Beckham’s lad Romeo took many steps his dad’s direction by pursuing a career in professional football.
His time was brief, but notable as he journeyed through youth academies and reserve teams, starting at Arsenal, moving to his father’s Inter Miami II (where he showed promise with assists and goals in USL League One), and then joining Brentford B in England before he retired in 2024 to focus on his developing career in the fashion industry, reports the Mirror.
Romeo is the second eldest of the Beckham brood, with the lad staying close to both his parents. The youngest, Cruz, has also started a successful career in music. But not all of Beckham’s offspring have chosen to pursue their parent’s career.
Beckham’s eldest boy, Brooklyn, walked away from football in 2015 following his release from Arsenal.
Brooklyn – then aged 16 – had been part of Arsenal’s youth setup alongside his two younger siblings. Nevertheless, the Gunners chose not to offer the youngster a scholarship that would have kept him at the academy, with reports suggesting coaches believed other players in his position were more advanced in their development.
Brooklyn’s exit came as a shock given he had been moved up to the club’s Under-18 squad just a month prior to his release.
Beckham’s eldest son naturally had the chance to pursue opportunities elsewhere, but Brooklyn chose to hang up his boots entirely.
His father later disclosed his son’s choice during a 2015 ABC interview where he discussed the matter openly.
“One of my boys turned around to me the other day and said, ‘Daddy, I’m not sure I want to play football all the time,'” Beckham told ABC.
“It broke my heart a little bit. He said, ‘Every time I step on to the field, I know people are saying, This is David Beckham’s son,’ and if I am not as good as you, then it is not good enough.'”
Brooklyn explored different career paths before finding his feet as a photographer.
He went on to release his debut publication on the craft in June 2017, titled “What I see”. He also attempted to get into cooking through social media videos, but not much seemed to take off for the social media star.
Now, he has publicly disowned his parents via an Instagram statement, where he called out Victoria and David for reportedly “controlling” his childhood. He also claimed that David and Victoria have “been trying relentlessly” to “ruin” his relationship with wife Nicola.
